"Jim made a valuable contribution inside the club. He always put the club first and always voiced the interests, views and wishes of the fans strongly.

"He was challenging, critical at times, but also supportive and balanced in his approach. We wish him well for the future.”

Jim Mitchell said: “I have been a United fan for 70 years and I never dreamed that I would have been on the board of directors.
