FRIENDLY: Penrith 1 - 5 United

Report from the Friday night friendly

1 July 2022

United were at Frenchfield Park to face Penrith in a pre-season friendly at the end of their first full week of training following the shortened summer break.

And manager Paul Simpson went with a split, with a completely different starting eleven for each half as he looked to get minutes into legs at this early stage of the campaign.

There were three trialists on show through the course of the 90 minutes, and Tristan Abrahams, Taylor Charters, Jamie Devitt, Sam Fishburn and Sonny Hilton were stood down as they nursed pre-season knocks and niggles.

United were on the attack with just two minutes on the clock when a trialist spun his man before crossing low. That was put behind for a corner, and the dipping delivery eventually came to Kilsby, who was 14-yards out. His rasping volley was saved well by Reay.

Carlisle saw plenty of the ball in the opening 10 minutes but the hosts defended in numbers as they kept things tight. Guy tried his luck from distance, but his effort lacked power and the stopper dropped low to gather.

The visitors probed as they passed the ball well, but it wouldn't quite fall as both Armer and Patrick tested the area.

A superb through ball from inside his own half from Guy carved the back line open midway through the half, and Patrick centred after beating his man. Edmondson battled but his first touch was blocked. It spun his way once more and a cheeky back heel almost did the trick, but Reay made the save.

Patrick went on the overlap again moments later and a whipped cross fizzed across the face of goal. It had too much on it and it sped away unhindered.

The lively Omari Patrick was dangerous once again out on the right flank, and he picked a great ball for Edmondson, who was on the penalty spot with his back to goal. He shielded it and fed it for Nugent to strike. The 17-yarder was accurate but Reay was well-placed to pull it in.

United took the lead on 34 minutes when Patrick found another inch perfect pass for Edmondson to chase. He took one touch, then another, and he showed a calm head as he slotted it into the bottom corner, despite Reay doing his best to keep it out.

Penrith were back on terms on 49 minutes when Marray Jones pounced on a heavy touch from Bollado in midfield. A firm strike left the trialist keeper with no chance.

Carlisle restored their lead moments later when Jordan Gibson dipped a beauty of a 23-yard free kick into the top corner.

And second-year youth striker Nic Bollado doubled the advantage in the next attack when he unleashed a thunderbolt from distance. Reay could only watch as it bulged his net.

A surge from Mellish took him into an attacking area as he got forward well with the away side now well on top. He beat a challenge and shot on the sprint, but he dragged it just wide.

Another excellent goal was bagged on 68 minutes when Moxon floated a peach of a pass over the retreating defence. Kristian Dennis timed his run well, and he controlled on his chest before sweeping a crisp volley into the onion bag.

Dennis was in the right place at the right time for a second time when he shadowed Carr as he overlapped on the right flank. The cut back was controlled with a deft touch before an accurate curler was bent round the dive from Reay.

There was nearly a hat-trick for the striker when he latched onto a dink from Gibson. Reay was beaten but it skipped beyond the upright.

Dennis was on the end of it again when he jumped to meet a delivery at the back stick. The keeper dived high to tip it away.

The last attack of the night saw Dennis roll the ball into Carr's path. He sent it low, but his bearings were slightly wrong and it edged past the target.
