Richie Bennett’s 52nd minute close-range thunderbolt took his tally to four for the season as he leads the way in the club’s early season goalscoring charts.

United manager John Sheridan spoke about the quality of the strike after the game, and also about some of the work the big forward is putting in as he looks to continue to improve his all-round game.

“The good thing was that he’d listened to what we’d spoken about when we were working on set plays and he got himself into an excellent position,” he said. “The quality of the strike meant it was always going to be a goal, once he got his boot to it.

“I’ve got to remember that Richie has come from non-league, and Ashley Nadesan has done the same, although he’s been at Fleetwood for a while now. They are two lads who are learning the game, and it’s totally different for them.

“Benno is chipping in with some important goals for us, and they’ve all been away from home. That’s one of the reasons I had him in the side on Saturday. He’s not playing out of his skin, but he’s something different to what we’ve got.

“He helps us defend when we’ve got set pieces against us as well. I would like a lot more from him, but most of all I’d like him to believe in himself a lot more. It isn’t just about long balls onto his head all the time. He’s another who needs to stick to the basics because, when he does, he’s a handful in this league.”

“As a team, and this isn’t me being overly critical, but if we keep the ball and protect it more we’ll be creating more chances,” he added. “I’ve said this before as well, but to bounce back after a defeat is a good sign.

“We’re not going to be the best team every week, but when you’ve got that never-say-die attitude you’re always in with a chance. I’d love us to pass the ball really well every week, but I know I’m going to get the desire and work ethic from the players for every minute of every game, and I can’t ask for any more than that.”
