As United head into what is always an important period gaffer John Sheridan confirmed that his focus is on getting the team back to winning ways as he looks to picking up points through the busy festive spell.
“Sometimes I do repeat myself but I honestly feel with these players we should be competing at the top end of the table already,” he said. “If I’d watched most of the games we’ve played this season I’d be saying that we should be one or two goals up in all of them.
“We don’t get battered and we don’t get outplayed, but we don’t make it easy for ourselves to win either.”
“I probably need to stop mentioning the play-offs,” he added. “We need to concentrate on each game as it comes and get back to winning a football match. When we’re winning, then we can see where it takes us.
“You look at everything when you aren’t winning games. You think about your system, your selection, your approach, and all I can do is stick to my beliefs."
“We’re making life very difficult and it concerns me that we’re letting a massive opportunity go by here,” he added. “We should have real belief that we can be around the play-offs as we go into New Year, but we’re in danger of letting it slip.
“We won’t manage to get back up there if we lose two then win one. That can’t be our sequence. It’ll leave us in the middle of the table and that’s no good to me. It’s not what I want.
“If other teams start winning you can drop even further down, and that’s definitely not what we want. The gap will get too big if we don’t get on a run so that has to be our aim, and we want to do that as quickly as we can.”
