Midfielder George Glendon joined United on a one-year deal from Fleetwood during the summer and he admitted this week that the weeks have flown by since he put pen-to-paper on that deal.
“The whole of pre-season has been about the Exeter game and it does feel like it’s come around really quickly,” he commented. “Everyone is buzzing for it and raring to go. It’s a long journey for the first game but it’s good to get it out of the way.
“Travelling is just part and parcel of football and I’m sure the lads are all used to it now. If we come home with the three points the journey will be well worth it.
“It’s all about getting a good start and getting the three points. The lads have said we have a good away following and that will be a massive boost on Saturday when we walk out at Exeter. I’m sure they’ll be loud for us and hopefully we can put on a performance which will send them home happy.”
His last run-out for the Blues was when he sat in the front of the back four for United’s friendly victory over Bradford City.
“The Bradford game was a good test for us,” he said. “It was good to get my first 90 minutes under my belt and it’s always good to get a win in any game.
“I enjoyed the role in front of the back four which the gaffer asked me to play. I like to get on the ball as much as I can, and we tried to play out from the back and keep the ball moving. To be the one to do that was enjoyable.
“I’ll always ask for the ball, that’s a big part of my game, and I like to get forward and try and create stuff for the team as well. I like to do a bit of both, but I did enjoy it on Saturday.
“Even though it was a pre-season friendly it is still important for us that we won it. The season starts this weekend so it’s good to be going into the Exeter game after a win and a good performance against a team from a higher division.”
And on his first introduction to United’s home fans, he said: “It was nice to be able to show them what I’m about.
“Like I say, it was good for us to put a good performance on in front of them and I’m sure they’ll all be there again against Northampton.”
Next on the agenda is the small matter of that season opener at St James Park on Saturday.
“I think the nerves are there a little bit with it building up to the first game of the season, but that’s important,” he told us. “It’s more excitement than anything. We know Exeter are a good team and it will be a good test for us.
“We obviously don’t know who will start but I feel like I’ve had a good pre-season. I’ve worked my socks off and done everything I can.
“It’s up to the gaffer on Saturday but hopefully I’ll be in the team.”
