INTERVIEW: Got to be ready to nail your spot down

18 June 2016

Midfielder Jason Kennedy on the competition for places

In the second part of our interview with popular midfielder Jason Kennedy he spoke about setting realistic targets ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

“The ultimate aim next season has to be at least a place in the play-offs,” he said. “The gaffer strives to be successful and I’m sure the players he has signed and will sign will help us to take the next step.

“It definitely has the feel of a club which is on the up. If we look back just 12 months we can see how much we’ve improved. We have a good bunch of lads who want to do well and I think we’ll be able to do that.”

“I had a good chat with the manager at the end of the season,” he confirmed. “I think I said it earlier but his main point was for me to make sure I got on the score sheet more.

“He was pleased with what I did over the course of the season and he wants me to continue to do the things I do in a positive way. As with all of us I’ll be looking to do much better next season.”

On how he has spent his time off, he said; “I think you have to work away at doing little bits. I don’t think there’s a time where you can completely shut off these days. I keep myself going even though you do have to enjoy your time with your family.

“If you did come back in having done nothing at all it would be a nightmare and you’d be found out pretty quickly. I’m quite fortunate because I actually enjoy running, so it doesn’t bother me. When the wife is at work and the kids are at school it helps to pass a chunk of time.

“In the back of your mind is the fact you know there’s going to be competition for places when you do get back. You’ve got to be ready to nail your spot down and keep your place in the team. I’m looking forward to the challenge and hopefully I’ll rise to it.”

And, having had Jabo Ibehre’s take on the disputed goal on the last day of the season at Notts County, he said: “It did hit me at some point but I’m not sure where!

“I think Jabo claimed it straight away so I’ll be kind – I’ll let him have it.”
