INTERVIEW: We'll keep going

Team captain Danny Grainger on the Cambridge draw

Team captain Danny Grainger gave us his reaction to the away draw at Cambridge shortly after full time on Saturday.

“It was a bit of a battle but this is never an easy place to come,” he said. “We learned that last season and that’s because they’re a good team. They’re just behind us in the league and we’re getting to that point in the season where everyone is fighting for every point they can get.

“Obviously it didn’t help with us going down to ten men early on but the result shows what we’ve got in the dressing room.”

“Getting the red card when we did meant our game plan went out of the window,” he commented. “When they have an extra man it means you have to sit behind the ball and be patient. It just shows how well we can get organised as a defensive unit from front to back.

“It’s always important to win the personal battles as well. There’s bound to be an overload somewhere, because of the extra man, but we’ve come out on top in more battles than we’ve lost. I think Mark [Gillespie] had two great saves to make but they didn’t really trouble us apart from that.”

“The character we had in the dressing room shone through in this game,” he said. “We lost a big player like Raynesy as well, when he got injured, and that meant other lads had to step up. I thought Macaulay Gillesphey was absolutely fantastic when he came on and it just shows what a future he has in the game.”

“We actually could have nicked it,” he agreed. “Derek [Asamoah] will be disappointed he didn’t score and so are we. However, he has bailed us out plenty of times this season and all we do is put it to the back of our minds and move on to Tuesday night.

“If we’d known the situation before the game, that we’d have a man sent off as early as that, I think we’d have taken a point. That means we come away happy. We did have the chance to win the game but, as I say, we move on to Tuesday now.”

“The games are running out but we’ll keep going,” he concluded. “I’ve said from day one that we won’t stop until it is mathematically impossible for us to get there.

“Everyone in that dressing room still has a massive drive to keep pushing on until the end of the season.”
