INTERVIEW: It's been sorted quickly

Striker Steven Rigg on his new deal with the club

Forward Steven Rigg agreed a new deal this week which keeps him at Brunton Park until the summer of 2016 having impressed the new manager with a two goal haul from his three appearances at the beginning of October.

Keswick-born Rigg, 22, joined the Cumbrians from Penrith in July having grabbed an amazing 64 goals from his two-year stay at Frenchfield Park. This included a post-war Penrith record of 35 goals last season, a feat which earned him an invitation to join United on trial for the pre-season campaign.

We spoke to him about his contract situation on Thursday afternoon.

“It’s obviously good to have this sorted and I just want to get back out there now having missed out on the last few weeks,” he said. “I wasn’t really expecting this to happen but I’m delighted that it has. It’s been sorted quickly so there wasn’t that much for me to think about.

“It was annoying to pick up the injury when I did because everything was going really well. That was down to me adjusting to full time football but I’ve been back out and training this week and it's definitely getting there. Hopefully I’ll be in contention for Saturday.”

“Now that the contract is signed my next target is to help the team get up the league,” he commented. “We’ve got some good lads in the dressing room and if we keep playing the way we have been the results will come.

“Like I say, it was a pleasant surprise when the manager spoke to me because I wasn’t expecting to have talks about the contract so early on. It gives me a bit of security and it means I can really concentrate on my football now.

“Now that I’m back I’m hoping to stay injury free and play a lot more games. I’m enjoying it and I’m happy with how things are going. I just want to keep improving and hopefully keep getting the goals."

“I’ve only played a couple of games so I do feel like I’ve got more to prove," he admitted. "It’s been a very strange few months, going from working shifts from 8am to 4pm or 9am to 5pm, or whatever, and now I’m doing this. Like I say, I'm really enjoying it.

“A lot of my mates are Carlisle fans so they are really pleased for me. My family are happy for me because they know I can concentrate on what I need to do here now and not worry about next year.”
