Danny Grainger on his free kick at Dagenham
Team captain Danny Grainger took time out of his player appearance at the Penrith U16 training session on Tuesday night to talk to us about his memorable first goal for the club.
“I caught the free kick really sweet,” he said. “Mind you, I would have taken a 1-0 win rather than scoring myself, but I'm delighted I've got my first goal for the club.”
“I knew as soon as it left my boot it was going in,” he admitted. “Robbo [Matt Robson] gave me a shout, because he could see it as well. It's always nice to score but we were disappointed with the result.
“It was more disappointing because we played so well against Accrington the week before. We didn't see it coming, especially after we'd scored first in the game. We should have gone on and dominated the game but a couple of minutes of madness cost us.
“And it really has cost us this week because it was a game we all thought we should have been taking three points from.”
“It was horrible in the dressing room afterwards,” he told us. “I think it was probably the worst we've felt this season. We've got to get over it quickly and make sure we get back to winning ways.
“We need to concentrate on the home form we've had and hopefully we can keep building on that. Newport will be a good test for us. If you look at them and Accrington they are in similar positions so we know it will be a tough game.
“Hopefully the boys will bounce back and show what a good team we are.”
