Connor Hammell scored twice, one straight from a corner, and Danny Hodgson bagged another as United edged their way to a 3-2 away victory thanks to grit and determination in what was a tight game.
"Credit to the lads because they dug this one out," academy manager Alan Moore said. "It wasn't their best performance but they've kept going, got their goals and edged over the line.
"They'll need to learn the lessons quickly from this one because we have a tough game against a very good Blackpool side on Tuesday."
