INTERVIEW: All about the team

11 March 2014

Courtney Meppen-Walter on scoring his first career goal

Defender Courtney Meppen-Walter spoke to us ahead of the Tuesday morning training session about his first senior goal.

"I was happy to score for the team," he said. "At the end of the game it didn't really feel like I'd scored and that was obviously because we'd lost. Hopefully I can score again and we'll go on to win it next time."

I was buzzing to get my first goal but it's all about the team performance," he insisted. "Getting three points is always more important."

On the goal itself, he said: "Bez [James Berrett] has got a good delivery and I knew it was coming to the back post. I decided to drop back there and thankfully he put it right on my head."

"We practice that sort of thing in training on the day before the game with Kav. A few of them came off for me in the session on Friday so it was great to see it come off in a game."

"I would like to chip in with a few more goals but my first job is keeping a clean sheet," he said. "If I can do that then scoring goals is just a bonus.

"I do feel like I'm learning in each and every game I play. I'm gaining more experience and learning something new every day so, hopefully, Kav will keep picking me and I can keep improving."

"Pascal [Chimbonda] and Sean [O'Hanlon] are great to play beside because they're both so experienced," he agreed. "They talk me through matches and they even give me tips after training about things I could have done differently. Sean has told me to be safe rather than sorry and hopefully I can keep doing that in games.

"Kav talks to me a lot about the good and bad things that I've done because he wants me to learn as quickly as possible. I'm grateful to him for giving me my chance and keeping me in the team. Hopefully I can stay in there and show him that I'm worth my place."

"Tomorrow night will be a big game," he said. "We'll be going there to get the three points. They're on a great run, so it won't be easy, but if we play the way we know we can we should come away with something."
