FRIENDLY: Barrow 1 - 1 United

19 July 2014

Minute by minute match report

A minute by minute summary of the pre-season friendly at Barrow on Saturday afternoon:

6 mins - The home side created the first real opening of the day, following a tight start, when Cook fed it through to Jason Walker inside the area. He shot early and a touch from Hanford allowed Thomson to hook it away off the line. The teams played on but a signal from the assistant referee indicated the ball had crossed the line and the goal was eventually given.

9 mins - United responded with a run of corners but strong defending denied O'Hanlon and Meppen-Walter as they lurked in deep areas.

11 mins - Another flowing move from the hosts left Izak Reid with a run into the box from wide. He let one fly and was a whisker away as it skimmed across the face of goal.

16 mins - A crossfield pass from Brough found Kearns in space but Livesey blocked when a powerful shot angled towards the top corner.

26 mins - Beck spun away from his man in the centre circle with a neat touch and a clipped pass left Gorman with space to cross. Grand did well to get across and clear it with Sweeney in close attendance.

28 mins - Harvey was felled on the edge of the box but Lacey was disappointed as he crunched the free kick into the wall.

33 mins - Patrick Brough cut back and beat two on the left wing but his cross, intended for Gorman, was thumped clear as Barrow recovered.

35 mins - Cook drilled another 19 yard free into the wall and the half clearance was followed up by a shot from Lacey which needed a deflection from O'Hanlon to take it wide of the upright.

42 mins - A foul on Meppen-Walter by Cook gave Gorman a chance to swing the ball in and Sweeney rose highest to greet the outswinging cross. His header had power but it lacked direction as it angled away from the far post.

45 mins - Andy Cook pounced on a back pass from O'Hanlon and Hanford had to move smartly off his line to make the block as the big striker tried to finish things off.

52 mins - Barrow started the second half brightly and a cross from Cribley found picked Walker out of the bunch. He volleyed it first time but he couldn't keep it down.

55 mins - O'Hanlon rose to meet a Gorman corner but his header lacked power and it was allowed to drop wide.

58 mins - Kearns slipped Gorman clean through but the keeper spread himself to make an important save as the Carlisle man set himself to celebrate.

61 mins - Meppen-Walter lost his man for a deep corner and loud appeals for a Carlisle penalty were turned down when Jason Walker appeared to tip the ball over the bar with his hand.

65 to 80 mins - Multiple substitutions halted the flow of the game with much of the play taking place in midfield.

82 mins - Rigg had a shot blocked as he combined with Dempsey on the edge of the area.

89 mins - Gillies was superb as he twisted and turned his way through three challenges before dropping the ball beautifully for David Amoo. His header nestled sweetly in the back of the net.
