INTERVIEW: Kick on from here

James Berrett on building on Brentford

Midfielder James Berrett spoke to us about last weekend's game at Brentford and about his recent form.

"It was a good point last Saturday and I think that was the type of performance we needed," he said. "Brentford are a strong team and they're doing well this year.

"It was important that we put in a battling performance and the clean sheet is what we've been working towards for a long time."

"We've been working hard on defending as a team," he continued. "We can't blame it all on the defenders because we need to defend from the front and I think we did that on Saturday.

"The point and the clean sheet was a massive boost for everyone. If the forward players can defend from the front then that helps us as midfielders which, in turn, means we can help the defence. That's how it needs to be in every game."

"The two last away games have been important for us," he admitted. "The two points mean that we're off the mark now and hopefully we can push on from here. We know we've been shipping goals too easily but I think we've seen from the last two league games that we're starting to put that to bed."

"We need to show the home fans that we're a good team now," he said. "We've been too open and we've let too many goals in and we need to show the fans that we're a better team. That needs to start this weekend.

"The last couple of weeks have been tough but we've stuck together and tried to keep each other going. The only way to get the confidence and belief back is to get results. Hopefully we can build on our good away performances at home this weekend.  The fans are right to criticise us. We haven't been good enough and we haven't given them enough to smile about. We want to show our fans what we can do on Saturday."

"It's really frustrating because we know we're better players than what we've been showing," he insisted. "The dressing room isn't a nice place to be when we concede three goals in ten minutes. We all go home and think about what we could have done better, and things like that. We know we need to start showing people we're a good side instead of just telling them that we are.

"It's definitely the toughest period I've been through as a player. Last year was difficult but the start of this season has felt worse because we've been conceding so many goals."

"It's always hard when people are raising questions about the manager, but we're all behind him," he told us. "We have to take some of the responsibility because once we go out onto the pitch there isn't anything he can do. We all need to be better, especially at home, and we need to show the fans and the manager that we're better."

"I haven't been happy with my form this season," he said. "It's very hard to play well when we're conceding that many goals but hopefully personally, and as a team, we can kick on from here."
