INTERVIEW: Talking still to be done

22 May 2013

Manager on his out of contract players

United manager Greg Abbott today confirmed that he has held face-to-face talks with the players offered new deals as he waits for their final decisions to be made.

“They still have their week or so left to consider the offers but I’ve met and talked to two of them at length already,” he explained. “I’ve spoken to another on the phone and the things I’ve heard haven’t been bad.

“I would imagine that out of the four we have a great chance of getting three of them to sign again. That still has to be happen but I’m very optimistic it will go that way. The other one will be a little bit more difficult to nail down, but I’m not going to name names as to which is which at this moment in time.”

“There is still a lot of talking to be done and nothing is concrete or set in stone,” he added.

“To be fair, they all want to play for Carlisle United but they are looking at what is out there and they want to make sure they do the best for them in terms of their careers. We have to respect that and we have to wait for them to make their decisions.”

And on the ongoing recruitment drive, he said: “I’ve met with three or four potential signings and I’ve spoken to three or four others. I’ve been on the phone with a few agents as well and we should have another one or two meetings done by the end of this week.

“That puts us in a position, once we’ve seen where we are, where we should be able to act on the work we have done. Hopefully we’ll be able to do something in the next ten days or so but we don’t want to rush into anything. If we can make it work, we will, but if it doesn’t then we will wait until we do find the right one for us.”

“We do have a player we are close to agreeing with and we’re in a good position with that one,” he revealed. “The fact we can offer regular football is a big tick in the box for him and he’s at a good age.

“He’s spoken to players who have had a good time here and he’s a free agent at the moment, so he’s available if we decide to pursue it.”
