INTERVIEW: Points on the board

Mark Gillespie on the need to pick up points

It was a terrific win for the Blues last Saturday against a Brentford side going well at the top of League One.

The clean sheet to go with the victory was also particularly pleasing for goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, as University of Cumbria second-year Journalism student Harry Barker found out.

“It was a great feeling to get that,” he said. “I think we needed the three points.

“We had a few tough games that didn’t go our way recently, but I think our performances over the past few games have been better than the results have suggested.”

As a goalkeeper clean sheets are obviously key, but Mark insisted that any result is a good one and a clean sheet is just a nice bonus.

“It’s all about winning games,” he told us. “I think clean sheets are something which are nice to have if you can get them. It goes without saying that you want to keep a clean sheet but, with where we are at the moment, we need points on the board. That’s the most important thing. Getting the win has to become our main focus.”

Speaking about the Orient match, he said: “We’ve got a good chance to build on the last two games. We’ll just try and keep our run going as long as we can and, if we can get a few wins, that will be great.”

And the arrival of two new defenders across his back four since the turn of the year has made things even more interesting for the ever-improving stopper.

“I think everyone has seen the benefits since Sean [O’Hanlon] came in,” he confirmed. “He’s really strong in the air and he and Danny [Livesey] have a very good partnership going. The results have picked up since his arrival, and that’s the same for Jordan [Mustoe] as well. They have settled quickly and we think we needed that.”

“Our aim has to be to keep winning games,” he concluded. “To finish where we are now would be a disappointment, I think, because we wanted to be much higher. We can still achieve that if we keep picking up points.”
