INJURY: Defender suffers setback

Second operation for Chantler

Defender Chris Chantler faces another frustrating period on the sidelines following a second ankle operation, completed last Wednesday, in a bid to help with his fight against a persistent infection in the joint.

Chantler, 22, made his last appearance for the club in the 1-0 home win over Coventry City in January and was advised to undergo surgery at the beginning of February following a trip to see the club specialist as he complained of discomfort in the ankle area.

He has since suffered a series of setbacks on his road back to recovery, due to a troublesome infection, and last Wednesday’s procedure included the removal and reapplication of small stabilising screws and sutures believed to be at the root of the problem.

“We’re at a point where we can’t put any timescales on his recovery,” physio Neil Dalton said. “He’s obviously extremely frustrated but it was felt that this was the best way forward to bring an end to the infection problems.

“He’ll now start the rehab process, once the wound has healed, and we’ll get a better idea of where we’re at once he is able to step things up.”

The versatile utility man made 31 appearances last season, having made the left back slot his own, and has played 44 games in a blue shirt in total since joining United from Manchester City during the January 2012 transfer window.
