FRIENDLY: United 1 - 4 Burnley

20 July 2013

Updates from the first home friendly

United play their first home friendly of the summer this afternoon with Championship side Burnley expected to give the lads their toughest test of the summer so far.

“The pitch is fantastic and it should be a good game," manager Greg Abbott said. "We’ll be up for it and I think they’ll come to do the job properly.

"We’re getting closer and closer to the season kicking off so players know they’re playing for shirts now. There are places up for grabs and it's up to them to claim them.

"This is one everyone will hopefully enjoy. They're a good team and we should see our lads step up to the challenge as well."

+++++++

1 min - Berrett surged forward from midfield and unleashed a shot from 22 yards. Shackell stepped across to make the block.

2 mins - Marney went down under pressure from James inside the area but the referee wasn't interested.

5 mins - Livesey underhit a pass out of defence and Stanislas pounced to take the ball into the box. Livesey made amends as he cleared the danger.

6 mins - Burnley stayed forward and attacked in numbers. Ross Wallace held his run at the back stick and was in acres of space as he drilled the low cross into the top corner.

8 mins - A good delivery found Miller on the run in the box. He got a touch and Heaton needed three attempts to gather the ball as he made the save.

10 mins - The Clarets pounced on a hesitant Carlisle midfield and had men to spare left and right. Ings called for it and finished it off with the neatest of touches underneath the advancing Mark Gillespie.

15 mins - Stanislas rattled the upright with a fantastic dipping and curling 28-yard free kick which Gillespie couldn't reach. The rebound fell to Livesey and he hooked it away.

17 mins - A promising run from Amoo came to nothing as he beat his man on the right only to drive his cross too deep and harmlessly away.

20 mins - Austin pulled wide and swung the ball across the face of goal. Stanislas checked his run and the ball drifted away.

22 mins - Danny Ings doubled his tally for the day when he latched onto a ball over the top from Marney. He took two touches to set himself before sweeping the ball into the bottom corner via the base of the upright.

24 mins - Gillies brought an ooooh from the crowd as his 26-yard free kick dipped over the wall and just wide of the target.

34 mins - A Gillies corner was half cleared as far as Berrett and he won another set piece as his first time volley struck Duff and went behind.

40 mins - Good one touch football, which included a lay-off from Ings, left Stanislas with a sight of goal at the edge of the box. He took the chance early and skied it over the bar.

42 mins - A Cross found Miller but his finish was chalked off as the flag went up for offside.

Half time: United 0 - 3 Burnley

47 mins - Carlisle started the half on the front foot and Robson thought he was through when he shouted for Miller to get out of the way of a cross from Amoo. Shackell watched closely and stepped in to stop the shot.

48 mins - Burnley responded with a lightning quick break and Ings found himself clean through from an intelligent Stanislas pass. His clip beat the keeper but also the bar.

49 mins - Excellent work from Lewis Guy with his back to goal left him with options and his pass to Miller brought a wild challenge from the retreating defender. Referee Eddie Ilderton pointed straight to the spot.

50 mins - Keeper Tom Heaton guessed the right way and made an excellent two-handed save to deny Miller his second spot kick finish of pre-season.

55 mins - Lafferty slipped and Amoo sprinted forward to take the loose ball into the box. He went for a shot from a tight angle which fizzed just over the bar.

57 mins - Junior Stanislas was given time and space at a corner and he made Carlisle pay when he calmly picked his spot.

58 mins - Lewis Guy scored a beauty when he went one-on-one with Heaton and left the keeper flapping at thin air with fantastic finish.

67 mins - Amoo twice went close - a shot from distance was tipped behind by Heaton and his header from the resulting corner went just over the bar.

77 mins - Robson took charge of a 23 yard free kick but it was an easy save for Heaton and is it dipped over his wall.

78 mins - Amoo looked impressive as he burst through midfield and rifled the ball at goal. Heaton parried it and Miller was left frustrated as he scooped the follow up into the Warwick.

85 mins - Brian Stock was a whisker away from scoring when his low shot deflected off Livesey. It was relief all round as it spun and bobbled just wide.

88 mins - Ryan Noble found a gap and almost nicked through until Edwards and James combined to stop him in his tracks.
