Miller on the Coventry game
United striker Lee Miller spoke to us at the post-match press conference on Sunday to give us his reaction to the win and to his new role as team captain.
“It was a massive performance and a massive three points,” he said.
“I thought we started that game really well. We were on the front foot and closing them down, and I think we deserved the lead at half time. The second half was a bit scrappy but we defended well and we earned the three points.”
“It was a huge lift when the goal went in,” he admitted. “Matt [Robson] did brilliantly in the box and it was a great header.
“We were delighted to get off to a good start and we had a few chances. Brad Potts was unlucky with his chance, but I thought we dominated the first half. Even though we got the early goal we just went about the game as we normally would have, but I thought we were on the front foot from the first whistle. We created enough chances in the first half to be two or three up.”
Looking back to the performance at Swindon, he said: “We needed a response. We were all disappointed because we weren’t good enough individually, or as a team. I think we proved a lot of people wrong today. Hopefully we’ve turned the corner with our home form, but we’re just concentrating on the next game now.”
And having been handed the captain’s armband we wondered how he felt with the new weight of responsibility which has been placed on his shoulders.
“I’ve never been a captain before so leading the team out was different for me,” he told us. “Obviously I’m delighted about it and I feel very proud. The lads work for each other and we’re all mates in there. There’s a good spirit so hopefully we can keep that going.
“I had a discussion about it during the week with the Gaffer [Greg Abbott] Danny [Livesey] and Thir [Paul Thirlwell] and I’ll be the team captain now.
“Greg didn’t really give me any specific instructions. He just told me to go out there, play the way I usually do and be a leader. There’s more than one leader out there, even though I’m the one who has the armband, so we’re all working for each other anyway.”
“We know we’ve been inconsistent,” he said. “We need to try and get a foothold in games then defend well, like we did in this one. Hopefully we’ve turned the corner and that can be the result which kicks us on.
“We defended well, we were throwing our bodies in the way of shots and still trying to create chances. If we carry on doing what we’ve been doing we should start to pick up results.”
“I think I’m getting there with my fitness now,” he concluded. “I’m still a little bit off the pace but that will come in the next few games.
“The crowd were brilliant today. They really got behind us and drove us forward. It’s tremendous to be on the pitch and receive that kind of encouragement.”
