INTERVIEW: We're on a good run

25 February 2013

Manager ahead of the visit of Walsall

Manager Greg Abbott spoke to us about the visit of Walsall on Tuesday night.

“Walsall have had a great season so far and this will be a really difficult game,” he said.

“Dean [Smith] has got them playing some excellent football and they are very well organised. They have to take credit because they have been consistently hard to beat and I’m sure they will have an eye on keeping in touch with the teams who are just above them.

“It’s one where you know you have to work hard or you won’t get anything. They’ll close us down and they’ll try to stop us from playing our game, but we’ll be ready for it.”

“We’re on a good run on our own patch at the moment and we want to keep that going for as long as possible,” he continued. “We don’t want the season just to fizzle out.

“We want to keep picking up points and we want the fans to go away with smiles on their faces. We need them to keep coming because we want to finish this season on a high and head into the planning for next season with a strong a hand as we can possibly have.”

“There is still a lot of work for us to do and our first target has to be to get to 50 points,” he said.

“We’ve battled hard and worked hard on the training pitch this last couple of months to make sure we were doing things better and that has paid off for us. Every single game is still important for us and the fact we have only lost one of our last seven games has been a reflection of that.

“The good thing for us at the moment is that when it comes to team selection is that we have options. Peter [Murphy] showed how ready he was when he came on for Danny [Livesey] on Saturday and that is typical of the feeling right through the squad. They all want to be part of it and the additions of Sean O’Hanlon and Jordan Mustoe have helped with that.

“We still have a couple of players with niggles who will need to be assessed ahead of Tuesday but overall we are very pleased with what we have. The message to the lads will be to get out there and to carry on with the levels of determination and effort which have got us onto this run.”
