CONTRACTS: Defender to move on

McSweeney contract not to be extended

Carlisle United Football Club can confirm that defender Leon McSweeney will not have his current contract extended when it expires on 4 January 2014.

McSweeney, 29, joined the Cumbrians on a four-month contract at the beginning of September and has made ten appearances in the right back role.

“I spoke to Leon after talking to the press today [Thursday] to inform him that we wouldn’t be extending his contract beyond January,” manager Graham Kavanagh said.

“It’s always a difficult decision but we have Pascal [Chimbonda] who has been playing very well and Brad Potts is improving all the time. We’re in a situation where we can’t carry three right backs and Leon was very understanding when I spoke to him this afternoon.

“I’d like to thank him for his services and it goes without saying that we wish him all the very best when he moves on at the start of the new year.”

McSweeney started his career in his native Ireland and joined Leicester City as a promising teenager before enjoying spells with Scarborough, Hucknall Town, Hednesford Town and Ilkeston Town as he waited for his career to take off.

He then moved to Stockport before joining Hartlepool in 2009, where he made over 75 appearances. He signed for Leyton Orient in the summer of 2011 but was released by the O’s at the end of last season when his two-year contract in East London came to an end.
