INTERVIEW: Different sides to our game

31 December 2012

Frank Simek on the Bury game

Defender Frank Simek gave us his reaction to what had been a tough test in the narrow but deserved victory over Bury at the weekend.

“That was a huge three points for us," he said.

“With where we are in the league it was massive for us to string back-to-back results together and it sets us up nicely as we go into the New Year.

“It was one of those where I enjoyed the first half ... but not so much after the break. We played some really good football but they got us penned in a bit in the second half. It was very similar to how it went down at their place. We held firm, even though it was disappointing to give the goal away, and it’s a game where getting the three points was all that mattered."

“I didn’t really pick anybody out for the second goal," he explained. "I looked up and saw a few blue shirts and I decided to pass it to that general area. Fortunately Robbo [Matt Robson] was able to finish it off. I do like to venture forward and help the team from time to time so it was good to get the assist."

“I think with the way the game went we just had to dig in," he added. "They threw the ball forward and you have to give credit to them because they made a real game out of it.

"The boys were buzzing in the dressing afterwards though. The last couple of months have been tough but hopefully we’ve put that behind us. Defensively we look much more solid and Mark Gillespie was absolutely outstanding, so it’s all coming together for us."

“We’ve also been getting those moments in games recently where things have gone for us," he added. "That hasn’t happened previously. We’ve started to cut out the silly mistakes and that helps a lot as well. We’ve shown a couple of different sides to our game and it’s important that we can grind things out as well as play the attractive stuff."

“There’s a real determination and confidence flowing through the team because it was another good overall performance," he said. "Tuesday is another one for us to look forward to and three victories in a row would be fantastic. Fingers crossed we’ll be able to do that.”
