SHARP AND READY

Manager on the Tranmere game

United manager Greg Abbott spoke to us this afternoon ahead of the visit of Tranmere Rovers for the first home league game of the season.

He said: "Our start to the season hasn't been bad even though we have seen things we want to tighten up on and areas we want to improve.

"The encouraging thing is that we've played some good football and we've worked well as a unit, and you can see that there is confidence right through the side.

"We came through a very tough test at Stevenage on Saturday and this will be more of the same tonight. Ronnie demands a lot from his players and he will want them to build on the very good result they had at the weekend.

"It's our first home league game of the season of course and we want to do what we can to make sure the point we gained from Stevenage becomes a very good point. We keep going on about our home record last season but the fact is that more of the same will make things that much easier for us.

"The lads have worked hard and the games are coming thick and fast. We're in a situation where everyone will need to be sharp and ready because we will pick teams to win games as we go through a very busy period.

"The injury to Lee [Miller] is an obvious blow but we have to deal with it. It gives other players a chance to step up and show everyone what they can do and I'm sure that's what will happen.

"The work to add to the squad continues but our focus is on tonight at this moment in time. We have a game we want to win so the message will be to get out there and do that."
