PREVIEW: Tuesday at Bradford

A look ahead to the midweek game

20 March 2023

United's rearranged fixture with Bradford - originally lost to the cold weather in January - has come around quickly with both teams enjoying some decent form.

opposition

United are five games unbeaten, Bradford are on a run of six, and both teams will be looking to protect that in what is another big one to look forward to.

Four of the last six outings have been clean sheets for the miserly Bantams - the last three have been draws - and it needed a brace from forward Andy Cook at the weekend to prevent strugglers Hartlepool from stealing away with the points.

With things so tight at the top of the pile this game in hand will certainly help for whichever team takes the spoils, and over 1,000 Carlisle fans are already committed to making the journey.

Both managers have recently celebrated their one-year anniversaries at their respective clubs, and former Manchester United striker Mark Hughes spoke recently about the rewards of taking the helm lower down the leagues.

"I've been guilty in the past of overlooking roles below the Premier League or Championship," he told the local radio recently.

"The reality is that managers higher up can be a little bit too precious about their reputation and think about reputational damage more than getting out there and doing the job.

"I wanted to get out there and get my hands dirty again and I haven't regretted it for a moment. The fundamentals apply whatever level you play at.

"I've really enjoyed it. The league is good and every team has one or two players who can hurt you.

"It's been a really satisfying period of my career and there's more to come."

who watch

A haul of 25 goals from 40 appearances so far this season from Andy Cook is hard to ignore.

He's on fire at the moment, with nine goals from his last 10 outings, and he's scored in five of his last six games.

A product of our youth team, we know all too well that he has more than just being a targetman in his repertoire.

Strong and athletic, he can hold the ball up and link the play, and he has a real eye for the nets if you give him half a glimpse.

A game blighted by red cards went the way of the Bantams back in September, as they bagged three in response to Olufela Olomola's early opener, but the match became a difficult one to measure for the Blues following a first-half sending off for Jack Bridge.

We hadn't seen Bradford prior to that since the 1-0 home victory at Brunton Park back in February 2014. Striker Lee Miller scored the only goal of the game - and it was an absolute stunner - and keeping goal for the Blues that night was a certain young man called Jordan Pickford.

A more recent meeting between the teams was the July 2018 pre-season friendly, played at Brunton Park. It was a tight game with the winner coming in time added on when Richie Bennett got on the end of a deflected Hallam Hope shot.

It was one they needed as Jordan Gibson bagged our late equaliser. Mark Howard was our other booking that day.

He was the man in the middle for our 2-0 away defeat at Cheltenham in August 2019, where Gav Reilly and Luke Varney scored the goals for the hosts. Jack Iredale, Nathan Thomas and Stefan Scougall had their names taken on the day.

Match Reports

MATCH REPORT: Bantams 0 - 0 United

Report from the Bradford away game

21 March 2023

United were at Valley Parade on Tuesday evening for their rearranged fixture with the Bantams.

And another disciplined and competitive performance saw the Blues extend their unbeaten run to six games, with substitute Jordan Gibson almost nicking it with a stunnng shot deep into time added on.

United dominated the first half possession and they created the first chance of the day when Moxon put a cross in from the right flank. Armer got there at the back stick but he couldn't get the direction he needed and it dropped wide of the post.

The Bantams had a run of corners but Holy brought the spell of pressure to an end when he came off his line to claim it.

Midfielder Callum Guy started to see plenty of the ball and he picked out Edmondson on the edge of the area. A flick invited Edmondson to chase but the keeper was off his line to scoop it up.

Another searching United ball forward was trapped by Dennis and he shielded it before finding Senior in support. He shaped to shoot but his effort was charged down.

Good work from Banks at the other end created space, and he fed it for Chapman to let one go. It was powerful, but it was always high.

The visitors kept the home side in their own defensive third and Armer looped a deep corner for Dennis to challenge for. It had Lewis beaten but it dropped wide of the mark.

Armer was a constant outlet and he twice had deliveries intercepted as he probed on the overlap, but things tightened up with McCalmont and Mellish thwarted by blocks as both defences did their jobs.

United kept coming and Edmondson clipped a header towards Guy, who fancied the shot. It was sliced and Lewis watched it on its way.

Barclay then backed up the forward play before picking out Edmondson, but his header was straight at the stopper.

A wild rising effort from Chapman signalled the start of the second period but chances were few and far between as the Bantams probed without getting any purchase.

It became a real battle, but Andy Cook was close as he diverted a loose ball towards the nets. Feeney made a vital block that took the swirling attempt onto the bar.

The Cumbrians responded with a decent spell and a drive from Guy brought a free kick just 19-yards out when he was upended. Moxon found plenty of power but it was always too high.

Both sides wanted the win, and a snapshot from Garner wasn't too far away. Holy had to spread himself as Bradford broke, with Cook at tight angle as he tried to squeeze it under the dive.

Oliver was next to try his luck, but his header was misguided, and it was the Blues who nearly nicked it with the last kick of the game as Gibson ripped into space. He connected with an absolute thunderbolt that smacked against the base of the post before being smothered.
