A minute by minute guide to the Sunderland friendly
United's first home friendly of the summer brought Sunderland to Cumbria for what was an enjoyable game on a perfect summer's evening.
1 min - An unforced error from Cabral gave United a corner and the Sunderland defence were made to work hard as Grainger delivered a beauty. Symington picked up the half clearance and skipped between two before sending another teaser at the near post. Amoo reacted first to a downward header but he blazed his effort over the bar.
5 mins - Karlsson broke wide and clipped an early cross towards the penalty spot. N'Diaye was there to volley it but it lacked power and was easily saved by Gillespie.
9 mins - Amoo cut in from the left flank, beat two challenges and went for a near post shot. It lacked direction and angled well wide.
13 mins - Persistence in midfield from Amoo left him with the ball at his feet as he robbed N'Diaye on the halfway line. A switch of play brought Symington into the mix and his cross had Paynter interested. A diving header headed for the bottom corner but Mannone went full length to tip it away.
17 mins - Carlisle went close when another good touch from Amoo took him away from his man.
19 mins - A sweeping Amoo cross found Sweeney in space and he popped a header back at Paynter. Mannone raced off his line to make the block. The loose ball was lobbed clear and N'Diaye suddenly found himself with time to shoot. He put his boot through it and Gillespie was relieved to see the deflection whisk an inch over the bar.
20 mins - United survived a real scare as a corner pinged around in the box. Wickham got a touch but Grainger held his position on the post and volleyed it clear off the line.
24 mins - It was a good spell for the visitors and a through ball from N'Diaye left Wickham one-on-one with Gillespie. A heavy touch from the striker allowed the big stopper to close the gap and make the save.
31 mins - Amoo had options left and right as United broke in numbers and he teased his defender before crunching a great shot past the angle of post and bar.
36 mins - Symington was a good outlet and he took control again when Kearns found him on the overlap. Brown got a vital touch to prevent Paynter from finishing it off.
39 mins - Archibald-Henville bullied his way through the midfield area before Symington took over. He went for the top corner from distance but he couldn't keep it down.
42 mins - Jones turned sharply in the box to wrong foot the United back line and his trickery eventually led to a shot which somehow squeezed under Gillespie. A half touch from the keeper allowed Grainger to move in and send it clear before it could cross the line.
45 mins - Symington and Amoo combined yet again as United ended the half on top, but a slight hesitation allowed Sunderland to close ranks. Brough went for a precise side footed shot and the offside flag was raised as Billy Paynter clipped it into the roof of the net.
47 mins - United picked up where they'd left off after the restart with Amoo finding space on the left. His cut back was perfect for Potts on the edge of the box but Mannone got down well to make a good save.
56 mins - Carlisle were loose in possession on the edge of the area and a Potts challenge on Gomez earned the visitors a 23 yard free kick. The effort was poor as it rattled into the wall.
61 mins - Multiple substitutions from the visitors were followed by a deep cross from Symington. Brough kept it alive and a powerful volley from Amoo had to be stopped on the line as Dixon was beaten.
71 mins - Sunderland broke at pace with Honeyman and Mandron exchanging passes. The latter found himself with space inside the area and he made no mistake with a crisp finish across Gillespie and into the bottom corner.
73 mins - Symington used his pace to open up a gap in midfield and Paynter was unlucky as he glanced a header just over the bar when he tried to find the top corner as Carlisle looked to respond quickly.
75 mins - Mandron shielded a high ball forward for Lawson to shoot. He hit it well but Gillespie was down quickly to smother.
76 mins - More slick passing from Sunderland put Lawson clean through. His eyes lit up but Gillespie spread himself to make an excellent save.
80 to 85 mins - Both sides played good football as things tightened up all over the park.
89 mins - A late corner for United found O'Hanlon at the back post. He stretched but the header looped over the bar.
