PREVIEW: Shrewsbury next up for the Blues

The Salop head to Brunton Park

1 September 2023

Carlisle United v Shrewsbury Town, Saturday 2 September, kick off 3pm.

opposition

Four goals for and four goals against from the first five league games is only part of the tale for Shrewsbury with that mean defence helping them to secure three victories and nine points which sees them anchored in mid-table.

The lively Daniel Udoh netted the only goal in last weekend's 1-0 away win at Fleetwood. That came on 41 minutes from the visiting team's only shot on target at that point.

Last season ended with the news that manager Steve Cotterill was set to leave after two-and-a-half years at the helm, with Matt Taylor appointed to take over at the end of June.

That sparked a busy few days as midfielder Carl Winchester, who had spent the previous season on-loan from Sunderland, agreed a permanent two-year deal. Defender Morgan Feeney followed suit the following day.

Marcus Bignot joined the backroom staff as assistant head coach and winger Elliott Bennett was given a reprieve from his release by Cotterill with the offer of a 12-month deal, which he accepted.

Wing back Elliot Thorpe came in on-loan from Luton, and Tunmise Sobowal headed over from Waterford in Ireland to agree a deal.

The flurry of activity continued as former Barnsley defender Jason Sraha signed for a year, and Hibs midfielder Nohan Kenneh also arrived, this time on loan.

The build-up to the start of the season brought Sunderland defender Joe Anderson on-loan, and Taylor Perry committed to the Shrews having left Wolves.

Max Mata was another to leave Ireland as he said goodbye to Sligo Rovers to ply his trade at the New Meadow, and the experienced Mal Benning left Port Vale to pen for a year.

Huddersfield forward Kieran Phillips, who had worked with Taylor at Walsall, agreed a loan to bolster the striking options.

who watch

There are a couple of very familiar faces in the Shrewsbury ranks - Morgan Feeney and Ryan Bowman amongst them - but we're going for Daniel Udoh as the one to watch.

Now into his fifth season with the Shrews, he's closing in on 150 appearances for the club and has 27 goals across that time.

He can play out wide, through the middle or just behind or alongside the main striker, usually Ryan Bowman, and can create as well as finish things off.

Ryan Edmondson opened the scoring in the Carabao Cup meeting between these teams at the New Meadow in August 2022. Luke Leahy levelled it up on the stroke of half time, but the game really sprang into life in the final 15 minutes. Daniel Udoh gave the Shrews the lead, only for Kris Dennis to peg things back. But added time was avoided when Chey Dunkley grabbed a late winner.

A six-year gap of not facing each other was breached in December 2021 when the Salop headed north for a second-round FA Cup game with the Blues. Tom Bloxham and Ryan Bowman established a two-goal cushion but Jordan Gibson rattled nerves with a strike in time added on. The Shrews saw it through to secure their progression.

The Shrews were at Brunton Park back in February 2015 prior to the FA Cup meeting above. It all appeared to be going to plan when Charlie Wyke put the home side ahead on 66 minutes, but football can be a cruel mistress sometimes. With game management completely chucked out of the window James Collins and Mickey Demetriou turned the game on its head as they both scored deep into time added on to win the game.

Match Reports

MATCH REPORT: United 2 - 0 Shrews

Report from the Saturday afternoon home game

2 September 2023

It was back on home soil to see September in for the Blues, with Shrewsbury Town our visitors.

Manager Paul Simpson made one change to his starters from last weekend with Jordan Gibson in for Alfie McCalmont.

Joe Garner, Jayden Harris and Jack Robinson were drafted onto the bench following their good showing with the reserves in midweek.

A run out wide from Bowman saw him latch onto a Kenneh pass with just three minutes on the clock and his centre had to be shepherded behind by Lavelle. Huntington dealt with the corner.

Fleet of foot from Gibson took him into space at the other end and he had Back in support on the right flank. His cross was deflected behind, and Moxon whipped it in for Plange to challenge. He got there but his header spooned into the Waterworks End.

The Shrews were incisive on eight minutes as two quick passes found Benning in a dangerous area. A fierce shot clipped a Carlisle man and whistled just past the angle of post and bar.

Moxon managed to wriggle free in the centre circle moments later and he spotted Maguire making a run. The pass was perfect until Anderson got the slightest of touches with his toe, and that was enough to take it through to Marosi.

Udoh dragged one well wide from distance as both teams cancelled each other out in the middle of the park, and the Blues got themselves a corner after Dunkley had sliced a delivery from Moxon clear. Dunkley was once again on hand to clear that dipper.

There was almost a sighter for Luke Plange as he stayed onside, but his punt on the run was charged down. Lavelle came forward for the set piece and he was disappointed when his close-range header sailed high over the target.

Marosi had good fortune on his side as Carlisle stayed forward with Gibson on the ball. He went one way, then the other, and the keeper was caught on the flap as he arrowed one at the bottom corner. The ball somehow stayed out as it screwed into the air off the stopper's hands.

A wild 22-yard shot from Tom Bayliss after good work from Udoh summed up a frustrating spell for the visitors, and the corner count continued to rack up for United as the hosts kept plugging away.

Tenacity from Maguire saw him steal possession  on the halfway line and it was suddenly three against one as Plange got his head down. Maguire continued his run, and he had just Marosi to beat as he bore down on the target. The keeper got enough of his body on it to stifle the moment.

Gibson and Armer then combined for the latter to put it into the mix, and a flick at the near post had Plange interested. Marosi stepped in to make it his.

The away team ended the half with a corner, and the half clearance was volleyed well wide by Benning when it dropped onto his foot.

Strength from Moxon at the start of the second period saw him peel away from Perry with his head over the ball. The through pass for Maguire was well weighted, and the striker was close as he thundered a shot on the run just over.

Lavelle scampered back to get in the way of an unexpected touch from Bowman but Andresson was able to gather it in as it diverted his way.

It was all about the blue shirts, with crosses from right and left, and Guy was urged to shoot as a half clearance from an Armer deep one bounced his way. He couldn't keep it down as it came off the top of his boot.

But it was awkward for Andresson on 55 minutes when a clipped cross from Bennett struck a defending boot and swirled over his head. He got a fingertip to it, and Lavelle readjusted quickly to make sure he got it away.

Carlisle regrouped and Guy gave Back space, and Marosi showed quick feet to put his clip behind. It proved to be a pivotal moment as Moxon's low corner struck Tom Bayliss before bouncing over the line.

The home side were buoyed by their loud and proud crowd and Armer created with another great run down the left. Mellish wanted a penalty as he was toppled when he shot, but the referee showed no interest.

There was almost a superb second goal when Plange stayed big to get on the end of a Back pass. His volley had Marosi flapping at thin air but it struck the upright and bounced clear.

Dunkley headed wide from a Bayliss free kick as a reminder that there was still work to do, and Andresson was down low at his near post to save with his feet when Udoh tried to squeeze it in.

Substitute Max Mata got on the end of a late cross from Bennett with a diving header but Andresson was comfortable enough to watch it on its way as it ran across the face of the nets.

United stood their ground through the closing minutes and they capped it off in style with Ablade calm in possession. He rolled it to the back post and Joe Garner made no mistake with career goal number 149 on career appearance number 550 - a goal which gave the Cumbrians their first League One victory of the campaign in front of a delighted home contingent.
