INTERVIEW: Anything can happen if you get a couple of wins

Josh Vela on signing for United

We caught up with midfielder Josh Vela shortly after he put pen to paper on his 18 month deal at Brunton Park.

“I’m pleased to get it over the line,” he said. “It’s been going on for a couple of days so I’m just happy to be here now.

"I think it’s been in the pipeline for a couple of weeks now but obviously at Fleetwood we’ve had manager changes which meant the situation changed there. I’m just delighted to be here now and I can’t wait to get going.

“I had a FaceTime call with the gaffer which was a first for me, I’ve never done that with a manager before! He told me that the club is going in the right direction. They’ve got good players here and we’ve obviously just been taken over by the new owners so it’s a place I’m really looking forward to being."

“I’ve been around the game now for a while and I was captain at Fleetwood for the last 18 months," he continued. "I’ll bring a lot of experience to the group and hopefully I can pass that on to the younger lads here which will help them.

“I wear my heart on my sleeve and try to lead by example. I like to get up and down the pitch, I do get a lot of yellow cards which I need to probably calm down on, but I’ll just guarantee that I give 100% in every game I play for this club.

“The option in the contract gives me a real incentive to have a good end to this season and see where we end up, then give it a right good go next year.

“I already know Joey Garner, I’ve got good memories of him at Fleetwood. I know Sam Lavelle as well, he was at Bolton when he was a young lad.

"I know a couple of the lads but I’m an experienced player now so it will be easy enough to fit into the dressing room. I’m fit and ready to go whenever the manager needs me to play."

“It’s a ten point gap now but in this league anything can happen if you get a couple of wins," he continued. "If you get a couple of wins back to back then the gap can quickly get smaller and it pushes you up the table.

"We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves and pick up as many points as we can.

“It will be a great game to start with on Saturday against one of my old clubs. They’re a good side in this league but I know Carlisle have already beaten them down at their place earlier in the season.

"It will be a good crowd here on Saturday and hopefully we can pick up the three points.”
