CENTRAL LEAGUE CUP: United 3 - 2 Seasiders

Report from the Tuesday afternoon game

17 October 2023

United's second CLC group fixture brought Blackpool to Frenchfield Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The Blues had lost their opening encounter at Wigan by two goals to one, with the consolation coming from Jayden Harris late in the day, whilst Blackpool had been on the wrong end of a 5-3 reverse at the hands of Barrow.

First-team players Terry Ablade, Jokull Andresson, Ben Barclay, Dan Butterworth, Ryan Edmondson, Luke Plange, Jack Robinson and Corey Whelan were joined by youth second years Jake Allan, Aran Fitzpatrick and Will Maddison in the starting eleven.

Francis blazed over for the visitors when he was played inside on the angle by Daniels with just two minutes on the clock, and an underhit pass from Maddison was snapped up by Lescott, just inside the Carlisle half, moments later. His cross on the run was cleared by Whelan.

Miles was felled on the edge of the box as the Tangerines got forward again, and Mariette set himself for the shot. He drilled it low but the wall did it's job.

A clipped ball forward by Allan took Fitzpatrick into the area, and he did well to shield it as he came under pressure. Plange took over, and he dropped a shoulder to make space. Chapman was in the right place to make the save.

A lovely through ball from Whelan split the defence for the Blues as the tempo remained high, and Edmondson overlapped to make the delivery. Opawale got in the way before Plange could apply a touch.

Blackpool looked lively and Francis asked for it after a long ball forward had bounced towards Donkor. The cross was deep, and Lescott stepped back to nod it down. Mariette volleyed but it sailed high into the sky.

There was a great chance for Francis to give the away team the lead when he found himself unmarked on the penalty spot. His volley was fierce but it whistled the wrong side of the upright.

United thought they'd found a way through on 25 minutes when Allan slid a pass to Ablade. He looked after it, with his back to goal, as Butterworth approached. He kept his head over the shot but Chapman dived long to make an excellent save.

Butterworth then showed pace to break in from the right and he opted to shoot on the sprint as it opened up for him. It was just a yard too high.

Donkor skipped away from a challenge in midfield to create space for Francis, and he waited for the ball to settle before shooting from range. It spun wickedly and arrowed well wide.

The Cumbrians took the lead ten minutes before the break when Butterworth executed a beauty of a shot from distance. Chapman had no chance as it sailed into his net.

Andresson had to be sharp just before half-time when Lescott charged onwards to meet a neat through ball. The big stopper was down at feet to stop the moment.

United almost doubled the lead on 44 minutes when Fitzpatrick sprinted out of the middle of the pack. He showed awareness to find Butterworth, and he was disappointed when a clean connection whisked across the face of the target.

Blackpool attacked first at the start of the second period with a through ball from Lescott to Daniels. He bore down on goal but he dragged his effort wide.

Carlisle doubled their lead when Butterworth steamed forward with the ball at his feet. He fed it to Ablade, and Chapman could do nothing as a bullet of a shot bulged his net.

The lead was extended further on 53 minutes when the Blues overturned possession deep inside the away half. Butterworth was all on his own as he forced another save out of the stopper, but Ablade was there to double his tally for the afternoon with a close range finish.

Chapman tipped a Whelan flick from a Butterworth free kick over the bar as the Blues camped forward, and Ablade was thwarted moments later as he cut in from wide to beat his man. His cross from the byeline was blocked.

Blackpool pulled one back on 73 minutes after Miles had done the hard work. Daniels pulled off his marker and waited for the pass, and he was accurate with a neat finish when it came his way.

Tangerine tails were up and Daniels fired one over moments later after Miles had once again got himself involved in the build up.

The save of the day went to Chapman when he somehow kept a point-blank volley from Plange out. The striker found a cruncher of a strike but he couldn't believe it as a strong hand diverted the ball onto the bar from down low.

Daniels headed a difficult chance over when he stretched to get to a Donkor delivery, and Andresson spread himself well at the other end to save with his legs with plenty of visiting shirts forward.

Blackpool pulled a second goal back late on when Miles skipped forward before rounding Andresson. He looked up before sending it over the line.
