Carlisle United welcomed back another familiar face back to Brunton Park in May 2022 when former-boss Greg Abbott joined Paul Simpson’s backroom staff as head of recruitment.

Abbott first came to Brunton Park in July 2006 as assistant to Neil McDonald in League One, and was caretaker, winning five of his 10 games in charge, before he was appointed to the number two role under John Ward.

He once again stepped up when Ward moved on and was handed the position on a permanent basis in December 2008. He stayed at the helm as United’s gaffer until September 2013, having taken the club to two Wembley finals, winning the JPT in 2011.

He has held coaching and managerial roles with Bradford City and Notts County, and was head of football operations with Mansfield Town.

Prior to his return to Carlisle he was in charge of recruitment at Solihull Moors, having overcome a cancer scare in 2018.
