Second part of our interview with midfielder Nicky Adams
In the second part of our interview with new arrival Nicky Adams he spoke about the importance of a winning mentality having recently won promotions with Bury and Northampton Town.
“I just want to win, that's the way I am,” he said. “I've been promoted out of this league in the last two seasons so I like to think I've got real ambition. I love football, I always give 100% and I love winning matches. I'll try and bring that enthusiasm onto the pitch and hopefully give the fans what they want to see.
“We've got some really good players here so if we can add a couple more to that we'll have a right chance next season. I know what it takes to get out of this league. It's a difficult division but everyone here is ambitious and I think we've got a really good chance.
“The manager wants us to play good, attacking football which is what the fans will want to see. Every game is different, we'll have to dig in and there'll be games where we don't play well and win. There will also be games that we will play well in and we won't win, so it's all about getting the right balance.”
Speaking about his record assists, which caught the manager’s eye, he said: “When I was at Bury I had the most assists that year - I think it was 14. Last year I had 17 assists in a title winning team, so that's what I pride myself on.
“I like setting goals up for the forwards and entertaining people. I like to get on the ball and make things happen, and I do pop up with the odd goal as well. I scored a rare header against Bristol Rovers this season and I think my only other headed goal before that was an own goal!
“The goal against Bristol Rovers was on the day we got promoted so it was a massive goal. I've spoken to the gaffer and we both agreed that over the last couple of years I probably haven't scored as many goals as I should have. I only got four this year but if I can get up towards double figures I'll be happy. I know I'll always set goals up, I pride myself on it, but it would be nice to get a few more for myself.”
And on familiar faces he’s looking forward to bumping into, he said: “I played with Jason Kennedy for a couple of years at Rochdale. We had a really good time there and he's a great player and a great lad.
“I know a few of the other boys as well so I know we've got some really good players here. I haven't spoken to JK yet but I'll drop him a text later on. Not many people knew I was coming here because it's all been sorted over the last week or so.”
And his final word was on his first impressions of the place, having seen first hand the aftermath of the Storm Desmond floods.
“It was a tragedy what happened here,” he told us. “The good thing is that football galvanises people so hopefully we can do well this year which will give everyone something to look forward to on a Saturday afternoon and a Tuesday night.”
