INTERVIEW: I'm loving it here

10 February 2016

Charlie Wyke on scoring goals and being offered a new contract

We spoke to striker Charlie Wyke about his goal in the Accrington game shortly after the full time whistle had blown on Saturday evening.

And we also took the opportunity to discuss the news, as revealed by the manager, that he was set to sign a new two-and-a-half year deal ... with the good news being that he has completed that signature this afternoon [Wednesday 10 February].

"It's obviously good to get back on the score sheet," he told us. "Three points was the most important thing so it's pleasing to get them.

"A few people have asked if the ball hit someone's hand before I scored but I'm not sure what happened. I think Jabo [Ibehre] went to have a shot, which got blocked, and it just fell nicely for me.

"I haven't been involved for the last two weeks, which has been frustrating, but I've come in and scored a goal which helped us get the three points, which is good.

"I think every now and again it's good to get a week's break, but hopefully I'm back now and I can stay in the team for a few weeks."

"I like the physical side of the game so I enjoyed the Accrington game," he said. "Just before half time I think one of their lads got his nose broken so they started the second half aggressively. The good thing was that we matched that.

"Our goals obviously came at good times in the first half. I'm catching Jabo [Ibehre] up in terms of goals now and I don't think he'll be too happy about that! It's good to have that competition within the squad. Hopefully I can get a lot more before the end of the season. I think that was my first goal since the Welling game so I don't want to go that long without one again."

"I enjoy playing with Jabo," he commented. "We both take a bit of pressure off each other because we can do the same things. We can run in behind and hold the ball up so you're only doing half the work, which gives you more chance to score.

"As long as we're winning and moving up the table we don't mind who gets the goals. It was good to go into half time with a two-goal cushion and we knew we just had to keep everything tight at the back during the second half."

"I think with the flooding and everything our momentum has gone a little bit," he admitted. "It was nice to get back to winning ways at the weekend. We knew how important the game was and we came out and won it. We've got games in hand on a few teams so hopefully we can turn them into points."

On being offered a new contract, he said: "I'm loving it here at the minute and I just want it to keep going. I'm delighted to have been offered a new deal because it means I've got no worries now. I can go out and enjoy my football.

"As soon as the gaffer said there was a contract on the table I knew I was going to sign it. It was first mentioned a couple of weeks ago but we weren't allowed to say anything. My agent has been in sorting things out and I'm just really pleased it's all done."

"My time here so far has been brilliant," he commented. "I think I scored 10 goals in total last season. It's nice to score goals wherever you play but I'm really enjoying doing it here. It does feel like my club now, it's close to home and I'm loving everything about it.

"I think I've developed a lot under Westy [Colin West] and the gaffer. The gaffer has helped me a lot, as well as Lee Dykes, so hopefully I can keep that going.

"The gaffer has shown a lot of faith in me so hopefully I can repay that over the next two-and-a-half years by scoring more goals.

"The manager always says how important it is to keep climbing the league and get better as a club, so that's what we'll try to do."
