Successful Show Racism The Red Card Event held at Brunton Park
For 20 years Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) has been educating young people about racism with the help of professional footballers at special events at football clubs.On Tuesday 7 February, young people from Thursby Primary, Westfield Primary and Monkwray Junior Schools took part in an educational event with long time campaign supporters Carlisle United Football Club, supported by the Carlisle United Fotball Club Community Sports Trust.
First team players Jamie Devitt and George Waring went along to meet the children and to answer the questions they had about racism. The children had plenty to discuss having participated in an educational workshop and see a screening of the SRtRC film.
Ged Grebby, Chief Executive, SRtRC said: “Carlisle United and the Community Sports Trust are brilliant supporters of the campaign. It’s great to know that the club are right behind the message we are trying to present to as many young people as possible – that there is no place for racism in society or sport.
“Racism is still, unfortunately, very much a problem. SRtRC Education Teams have encountered a range of prejudicial attitudes from young people and adults towards immigrants and Muslims in recent months, in a variety of settings. It is so important that young people hear from role-models about why racism is so damaging, combined with educational activities.”
The educational events at football clubs allow young people to experience a first-hand interaction with anti-racism role models and spend time thinking critically about this important issue.
During the 2015/16 season the campaign held 39 events in England, attended by 65 current professional footballers, 26 former professionals and educating 3,243 young people.
