YOUTH: United 3 - 2 Stockport

23 April 2024

The under-18s got back to winning ways against Stockport County on Saturday, after goals from Freddie O'Donoghue, Simon Rigby and Romeo Park saw United come from 2-0 down, to win 3-2 at Creighton.

It was the visitors who dominated the opening exchanges and took the lead after five minutes played. Stockport worked it well down the left and a cross into the box was met at the near post by the Stockport forward who finished it off.

Minutes later, Will Nicholson did well to recover from a mistake to block a goalbound effort before Thomas Randall was required to make an excellent save to tip an effort past the post.

After the early Stockport chances, never side really imposed themselves with a lot of the ball remaining in the middle third of the pitch.

Just before the interval, Robbie Swinburn found himself in a bit of space in the Stockport half but his effort from distance flew over the bar.

Half-time: Carlisle United 0-1 Stockport County

On 57 minutes, Stockport did find a second goal. A deep corner was headed back across the box where an effort rebounded off the post into the path of a Stockport player who volleyed home to give County a 2-0.

Nine minutes later, United pulled a goal back. A long ball forward from Randall was flicked on by substitute Simon Rigby, which caused confusion between the Stockport defender and 'keeper who both failed to clear the ball and O'Donoghue was there to finish into an empty net.

United had a chance to equalise in the 74th minute after Josh O'Brien picked out O'Donoghue over the top, but he could only find the side-netting with his effort.

Five minutes into additional time, United were level. Romeo Park found Rigby in plenty of space, who unleashed an effort from outside the box right into the bottom corner.

As the game ticked over into the 97th minute, the ball struck a Stockport hand in the box and United's penalty appeals were awarded by the referee who didn't hesitate to point to the spot. Park took the penalty and intially saw his effort saved, but the rebound fell straight to the feet of Park who fired the ball into the roof of the net to give United a 3-2 lead right at the death.
