Another weekend away day for the Blues

The games continue to come thick and fast and we're off to Boundary Park this weekend for another important fixture.

Former Carlisle boss John Sheridan returned to take charge of the Latics for a sixth stint at the end of January - five years since his last spell with the club - with them cut adrift of safety by a whopping seven points at that time.

The 57-year-old is no stranger to this type of situation at Boundary Park with him twice previously having guided the club to survival.

Another former Blue, Keith Curle, had been replaced by Selim Benachour, but positive results remained a tough ask as the club went on a run of defeats.

Sheridan was duly appinted and he was quick to turn to Tommy Wright for assistance - rekindling the management partnership they'd enjoyed at Brunton Park.

In the bottom two heading into this game, the Latics are actually one of the division's form teams with four draws and three wins from their last seven games.

Tuesday night took them to Crawley for the latest in that haul of stalemates, and it was a topsy turvy meeting as they took the lead through Hallam Hope, only to go behind to two quickfire strikes from Ash Nadesan. Christopher Missilou netted the leveller.

With games in hand over many of their closest rivals there's a renewed sense of optimism both on the terraces and on the pitch.

They've started to turn chances into goals, which has been important, and that's been backed up by defensive displays much more solid in their nature.

United will have a large, loud and expectant visiting band of blues, so it should be an interesting contest.

Davis Keillor-Dunn is the obvious selection for this weekend.

He scored last Saturday against Colchester, taking his season tally to 12, and he's also a player who is heavily involved in much of what happens going forward.

Mobile, strong and athletic, he'll need to be guarded against.

As well as Shez and Tommy, it'll be really good to see Hallam Hope and Nicky Adams once again.

It was 0-0 at Brunton Park in October 2021. The sides created chances, but none were taken and the stalemate was the order of the day.

The game at Brunton Park in February 2021 appeared to be going the way of the hosts with a Josh Kayode strike giving them a lead to take into the break. But it all went wrong in the last 20 minutes when a Marcus Hilssner penalty was complemented by late strikes from Dylan Bahamaboula and Carl Peirgianni.

The Latics needed a late Zak Dearnley leveller in October 2020 when we went to Boundary Park for our league meeting. Aaron Hayden had given the away side the lead just after the break but Oldham struck back to secure a point with just 10 minutes left to go.

The Latics bagged progression to the second round of the Carabao Cup when we went there in September 2020 at the first stage of that competition. First half goals came from Ben Garrity and Bobby Grant, with Conor McAleny sealing the deal with a late strike.

Our referee for this game is Mr Sam Allison.

He has been in charge of 24 games so far this season showing 94 yellow cards and six reds.

We saw him at Leyton Orient for our 3-2 away win in May 2021. Jon Mellish, Lewis Alessandra and George Tanner bagged our goals, and Mellish joined Ethan Walker in the book with a yellow card.

He first officiated a game involving United in March 2021 when we made the short trip to The Globe Arena to face Morecambe. The hosts took a three-goal lead before Aaron Hayden bagged a late consolation, and Lewis Alessandra was the only Carlisle name taken on the day.

MATCH REPORT: Oldham 1 - 2 United

Report from the Saturday afternoon away game

6 March 2022

United were up against former boss John Sheridan at Boundary Park on Saturday afternon.

And Paul Simpson's third game in charge brought an unchanged starting eleven for a third consecutive game, with the bench also untroubled on this occasion.

Both teams started brightly, with crosses cut out by attentive defending, but a whipped delivery from Piergianni was just a whisker in front of Hope as he threw himself at it.

The Latics won an early corner when Hart floated a high one that dipped towards the bar. Howard made sure it went behind, and United then had three crosses from Adams to contend with in quick succession, with each one being blocked or dealt with.

Jordan Gibson almost found the perfect through ball with nine minutes on the clock as he curled it round Hart for Patrick to chase. The forward got there just a moment too late.

There were loud appeals for a penalty moments later when Devitt controlled a clipped pass from Dennis at a tight angle. His touch would have set him free, and it appeared to be a hand that stopped it, but the referee showed no interest.

Good work from Armer took him beyond Clarke and a volleyed delivery found Patrick in space. He misjudged his 10-yard header and it looped high.

It was played at a frantic pace and a clearance from Simeu was touched on by Gibson as he spun away from Clarke in the packed midfield area. There was room to run into and the wide man rode another challenge before trying his luck from 20-yards. It had power but it was easy for Rogers to take.

Carlisle crafted another good move in what was a good spell for the visitors when Dennis was gifted possession. Gibson and Devitt got involved, and a floated pass put Riley into the box. He miscued his volley and Piergianni was able to clean up.

Simeu had a pass picked off when he tried to spread it to Gibson, an Oldham flooded forward. It came to nothing as Feeney got his head to the resulting corner.

The hosts were awarded a penalty on 25 minutes when roars for a handball from Simeu accompanied a free kick delivery from Adams. The whistle blew but Howard was superb as he went the right way to stop the Keillor-Dunn spot kick with his legs. Bahamboula was first to the rebound but he punted it wide, much to the delight of the travelling fans behind the nets.

Howard was in action again when Hart drilled the ball past Riley. Keillor-Dunn struck it, and the stopper palmed it down before picking it up. Hope was booked as he arrived late with a high boot.

United went close just before the break when Patrick took the ball from Dennis. Gibson asked for it, and he had Riley in support. A deep cross from the right back eventually sat up for Devitt, but he was under pressure and his rasper crashed into the side netting.

Bahamboula sent a close-range header high over the bar when he got on the end of an Adams cross, and Piergianni put one onto the roof of the net when the same player flighted a corner his way.

The Latics took the lead with the last kick of the half in the third minute of added time, when a cross from the left caused all kinds of problems. Mellish sent it onto his own post, and Missilou caught the spinning loose ball all wrong when he dragged an effort across the face of the target. It didn't matter as Hallam Hope buried it from just three-yards out.

United were back on level terms just three minutes after the restart when Gibson stole possession in midfield. Dennis wasted no time in sliding it onwards, and Omari Patrick showed his confidence and composure when he strode forward before slotting it home to make it four goals in his last five outings.

There was defending to do as Adams and Hart peppered the box, but Hope flashed a header wide and the Cumbrians were able to settle back into their shape.

Armer worked hard to keep a positive situation alive, as did Mellish, and they kept the hosts pinned back as they got support from every player in a black shirt. Devitt bided his time before pulling into space and he was disappointed when he clipped a curler into the stands.

Oldham had a spell of their own where they had plenty up front but Simeu and Mellish were on hand to make timely interventions. Adams stayed out wide and Keillor-Dunn got on the end of an outswinger, but it lacked control and Howard watched on in comfort.

The away side should have turned the game on its head on 75 minutes when a surge from Riley opened things up. Gibson delivered on the run and Patrick arrived late to head it. The fans were ready to celebrate but he couldn't quite find his bearings and it whisked over the target.

There was a difficult dipper from Adams for Howard to get fingers to late in the day, and he did just enough to make sure that Hope wasn't able to apply any kind of touch.

Patrick did the battling to keep two at arm's length on the edge of the area on 80 minutes and he cut it back for Devine to meet. The shot was low but straight at Rogers.

There was a scramble from a Guy corner when Sho-Silva nodded it down and back into the six-yard area, but the stopper pounced as the ball rolled through legs.

United thought they'd won it in the final minute when Clarke gave it away to Devine. He used Patrick who fed it onwards to Gibson. Two touches later he crunched a volley just wide.

Guy then tried his luck from 18-yards and Rogers was relieved when it went past the post after it had skipped off the surface and hit him on the chest.

The Cumbrians kept going and they got the ultimate and much-deserved reward when Feeney found the top corner with a pinpoint header from a fantastic Guy free kick which hit the bar then the post before going in.
