MATCH PREVIEW: United host the Shrimps

Tuesday night action at Brunton Park

26 October 2020

We've said this before, but it feels like these teams have gone head-to-head way more than they actually have.

bits

But we've actually only met on a total of 22 occasions, and the draw is by far and away the most common outcome between these local rivals, with just over half of the clashes ending up that way.

  Carlisle wins Draws Morecambe wins
Cup 2 3 1
League 4 8 2
FA Cup 1 1 0
Total 7 12 3

The unwritten rule is that neither side wins their home games when it comes to league fixtures - a crazy situation which has been the case since the sides first met in League Two on Boxing Day in 2014.

Carlisle have hosted the Shrimps in league competition six times, drawing four and losing two. Meanwhile down by the seaside Morecambe have also welcomed us six times, drawing twice and losing the other four.

It will come as no surprise to read that both of our Conference meetings back in the 2004/05 season were also drawn encounters.

United head into the midweek encounter on a five-game unbeaten run, with three wins and two draws from those October fixtures.

update

Morecambe's September league fixtures were as mixed a bag as you can get, with two very good away wins against Cheltenham and Southend punctuated by a thumping 5-0 home reverse at the hands of Cambridge.

The Shrimps took their winning streak to three-in-a-row as they beat Oldham and Port Vale at the beginning of this month, but they were back down to earth with a bump two weeks ago when Crawley blasted four second half goals into the net to send Derek Adams and his men on the long journey home with plenty to contemplate.

Last Tuesday brought a 1-1 home draw with Mansfield, with both goals coming before the break, and they were on the their own patch again at the weekend when Forest Green came to town.

That appeared to be going to plan when AJ Leitch-Smith put them ahead in the first half, but late goals from Jake Young and Jamille Matt meant that it was Rovers who celebrated come the final whistle.

With two defeats and a draw from the last three games, the Shrimps will be looking to get back to their early October and early season form as quickly as possible.

Aaron Wildig and Carlos Mendes Gomes are steady performers, as is former-Blue Cole Stockton, but we've gone for Adam Phillips, who is finding the back of the net regularly.

His five goals from 12 appearances are a big part of the good form the Shrimps are enjoying, giving him close to a 33% goal conversion rate for those of you who like that kind of stat.

Nat Knight-Percival and John O'Sullivan are two other names you may recognise.

highlights

Morecambe were at Brunton Park in February 2020 and early goals from Cole Stockton and Aaron Wildig put them in the driving seat. The hosts bit back with a strike from Omari Patrick just before the break and Aaron Hayden completed the comeback midway through the secind period.

The December 2019 league meeting at the Globe was, rather unsurprisingly, a 1-1 draw. Hallam Hope put the away side in front just two minutes after the break but former-Blue John O'Sullivan squared things up just three minutes later.

Our first meeting that season was for the Leasing.com group game in November 2019. History was made on the night when Jarrad Branthwaite become the club's youngest ever goalscorer, but Andrew Tutte, Aaron Wildig and Luke Conlan struck back in the last half hour to take the points for the hosts.

United were first-footers on New Year's Day at the Globe in January 2019 when goals from Jamie Devitt and Jack Sowerby secured a strong 2-0 away victory.

The Shrimps were last at Brunton Park in October 2018 and they took a grip on the game before the half hour mark, with goals from AJ Leitch-Smith and Vadaine Oliver providing a two-goal cushion. United never recovered and the game ended 2-0 in favour of the visitors.

Morecambe twice took the lead in our Checkatrade Trophy group game at the start of September that same year but stunning goals from George Glendon and Macaulay Gillesphey took us into the break all-square. Then a first goal for the club for Jerry Yates, with 15 minutes left to play, proved to be the match winner as the Blues closed ranks to claim their points.

Ross JoyceOur referee for this game is Mr Ross Joyce.

He has taken charge of eight games so far this season showing 28 yellow cards and one red.

We last had him as our match official in March 2019 for our long away trip to Rodney Parade. Goals either side of the break sunk the Blues, and Anthony Gerrard had his name taken on the day.

He was in Cumbria for our December 2019 2-1 home win over Macclesfield. Hallam Hope and Jerry Yates scored our goals and Gerrard, Devitt and Yates were the Carlisle names taken on the day.

The first time we saw him that same season was for the Carabao Cup meeting with Blackburn Rovers in August. Hallam Hope scored United's goal, but it was an emphatic win for Rovers on the night as braces from Bradley Dack and Adam Armstrong were complemented by a neat finish from Kasey Palmer. Kelvin Etuhu was the only name taken on the day.

Match Reports

MATCH REPORT: United 3 - 1 Morecambe

Report from the Tuesday evening home game

27 October 2020

United headed into the Tuesday night game with a five-game unbeaten run to protect, and manager Chris Beech went with an unchanged starting eleven for a fourth game in a row.

New arrival Micah Obiero took a place on the bench, with Lewis Bell also recalled to the substitute ranks.

Well, where do we start!

The Blues were ahead inside the first minute when former-Morecambe front man Lewis Alessandra raced towards the Waterworks End from deep. He had support, and he clipped a lovely ball through for Kayode to cross. The forward kept it low and Yann Songo'o was horrified as it hit his shin and spun over the line.

Just two minutes later and the hosts were on the hunt again, and Mellish was well advanced as he looked to help Alessandra, Tanner, Riley and Kayode, who had done a good job of turning the back line inside out. He dropped his shoulder and sent the ball over, and Turner could do nothing as it dipped over his head and into the far corner.

As a side note, that took the midfielder's tally to six goals in seven October games.

It was all about Carlisle and more good work from midfield saw Kayode break through. Turner did well to get close enough to make the block and prevent what looked a certain goal.

With no time to take a break Alessandra went on another forceful surge as he angled a run to go past two challenges. He was suddenly clean through, but Turner dived full length to take the ball from his toe just as he shaped to finish it off.

All of this was inside the first 12 minutes, with the Cumbrians looking like they'd score every time they crossed the halfway line.

Things settled down for a spell, and Morecambe showed as an attacking force when Gomes Mendes hung the ball up as he looked for the run from Mellor. McDonald stayed close and the header from the right back rose away from the target.

Toure had half a sight at the other end, when he combined with Riley to make space, but his effort from distance was too close to Turner.

A huge throw from Kayode followed as United regained the forward momentum, and the flick from Toure sat up nicely for Alessandra, who was positioned on the penalty spot. His fierce volley was going in until Turner jumped high to tip it over the bar.

The Shrimps broke just after the half hour and Wildig tried to bully his way through as he reached the edge of the area. His shot was blocked, and the follow up from the same man dropped comfortably for Farman to grasp.

There was some good passing and movement on show from the home team and Tanner and Riley stayed close as they brought Mellish into play. He kept a 24-yarder low but it skipped past the upright.

A challenge from Joe Riley on Songo'o brought anger from the Morecambe bench just before the break, but a yellow card was shown despite the vociferous comments from the away staff.

Morecambe tried to find a way back and O'Sullivan threaded a pass through as Slew shook off his man. Another snapshot was blocked, and Farman did well from the corner to punch it away.

United had a quiet claim for a penalty when Mellish had his heel kicked just as he turned away from a tackle. His shot skewed wide and the referee showed no interest in his remonstrations as he was dumped to the floor.

Mellish was the man on the spot again when he picked the ball up halfway inside the visiting half. He let fly, but he pulled it wide.

Carlisle survived a scare with the last kick of the first half when Sam Lavelle got on the end of a Wildig free kick. He was off balance as he connected with a header and it bobbled harmlessly towards the corner flag.

A spin and turn from Alessandra took him on a forward run at the start of the second period, and his delivery across the face of goal was begging to be tucked away.

Midfielder Callum Guy then sent a free kick into the box, and Hayden did enough to get it to Toure. He went for glory but he couldn't keep it down.

Carlisle continued to ask questions and a deflected shot from Alessandra from 19-yards left Turner rooted to the line. He watched in relief as it twisted into the side netting.

The corner delivery from Guy ricocheted around inside the box, as Hayden and Kayode kept it alive, and Farman had to be on his toes at the other end when O'Sullivan dropped deep for a pass from Wildig. A low delivery came but the keeper got there quickly.

Even better from Farman followed when substitute Adam Phillips forced a path towards goal. The keeper spread himsef to make a fantastic stop with his thigh, and then with his hand.

Morecambe were back in it with 11 minutes to play when a dipping corner was met on the full by Songo'o. He got enough on it to guide it into the bottom corner and to ensure that it would be a nervy finish.

But any doubts were calmed when George Tanner, who had spent a spell on-loan at Morecambe last season, restored the two-goal cushion with a blistering run and an equally blistering finish.
