PLENTY OF POSITIVES

Posted on: Thu 02 Sep 2010

Head of Youth Development Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 2-2 draw at Rochdale last weekend.

He said: "The first 20 minutes was probably the worst display since we came back in July.

"We were poor and didn't look at the races at all. We found ourselves a goal down after a misunderstanding between Jonny Ball and Steve Swinglehurst which resulted in Steve putting the ball into his own net.

"We got a lot better and eventually drew level after 25 minutes. Matty Osmond has put over a cross from the left hand side which has deceived the keeper. Matty's told me he went for it and if he has, it's a great bit of play but I tend to think he's just gone for the cross and the keeper's just misjudged it and it's gone in.

"Second half there didn't seem to be many problems and we started off ok, having several chances to score but we didn't and then got done from a corner kick. They've blocked Jonny Ball and done the same to Steve Swinglehurst. On another day a referee might have seen it as a foul but it wasn't given and we found ourselves 2-1 down after dominating the early part of the half.

"We did manage to get ourselves level within three minutes. Matty Osmond again overlapped, cut inside and from the edge of the box drove a shot into the top corner of the net. We've had a couple of chances to win the game and we didn't take them. It's becoming a bit of a worry but overall with the exception of that first 20 minutes we gave a good performance. We were missing Ben McKenna as he was on international duty with Northern Ireland U18s and Bradley Potts and Paddy O'Brien due to injury.

"That's left us a bit thin on the ground at the moment and that's why we've got two U16 players in there. I thought Josh Calvert did a decent job for us on his debut and even with his two goals I though Matty Osmond had a terrific all-round game.

"There were plenty of positives to take out of it and the main one is that last season we never once came back from a goal down to either draw or win a game. This time we've come back twice from being a goal behind to get a draw. Overall I think we should have won the game but I'm still fairly satisfied with how things went."
