A VERY GOOD DISPLAY
Youth boss Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 4-0 away win at Burnley:
"You always anticipate a tough game when you go down to Burnley because they have always been one of the stronger sides.
We needed to bounce back after two disappointing defeats, and I was worried ahead of the game that it might be another difficult day for us.
We've got this record since I have been here that we haven't lost three games on the run, and we don't intend to start now. I used that as a bit of a motivator before kick off and, to be fair to them, they started really well and responded to it.
You can't be anything other than delighted with a four goal victory against a top level team. I thought that the way we went about things was as good as I've seen from this group.
The tempo was right, the back four were excellent and we worked really hard off the ball, and that's been a particular criticism of mine for a number of weeks. It's good to see that they finally put it into practice.
We could have taken the lead as early as 90 seconds when Mani Richardson got through. I'll give credit to the keeper for a magnificent save at the foot of his post but, to be critical, Mani should probably have scored.
That didn't knock our confidence and we carried on looking really good every time we went forward. We got our reward on 16 minutes when Mani Richardson got on the ball inside the 18-yard box and shifted it from his left boot to his right. That opened up a bit of space and it was a very cool finish.
We kept it going but we couldn't get that second goal that would have eased the pressure. We had three or four really good chances to extend the lead and it was a worry that we didn't finish at least one of them off.
That took us into half time with just the one goal lead and I warned them that Burnley would come back at us strongly. They kept us waiting for kick off, as they had a few things to talk about. Anyone who comes to Creighton will see that my half time talks usually take about 30 seconds, but Burnley clearly wanted to use the full 15 minutes to discuss how they were going to approach the second half.
Shortly after the restart Mani Richardson broke through again and the keeper brought him down to give us a penalty. Strangely for Ryan Bowman, who is usually good in these situations, he missed it, and we did start to wonder if that would give them a bit of a lift.
We finally got the second goal that we deserved on 59 minutes when Bowman got clear, went round the keeper and slotted the ball in. He's very good when he gets into those positions and he didn't disappoint.
Burnley lost a bit of heart after that and we controlled the game. We were three up after 80 minutes with another good finish from Bowman and that set him up for his hat-trick.
That's something that he has added to his game. He was comfortable with getting just one goal last season, but he has added a bit of hunger now. He wants to score as many as he can.
He completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute and that was down to him running clear. He could have squared it for James Reid but he found the bottom corner with an excellent finish and we don't have any complaints about that.
It was a good performance from the back four and I have to mention Mark Gillespie. He pulled off a wonder save towards the end of the game, and had it been when we were only leading by one goal we'd have been talking about it for weeks.
Hopefully we can build on this and step things up now. I have to hope that I'm finally getting through to them, but we'll see. I told them at the end that it was the best I'd seen from them as a group and they knew that they had played well. The challenge now is for them to keep it up. If they perform like that every week then I will be happy, even if a few results do go against us.
Mani Richardson joined up with us and did very well. Everyone is impressed by him. He has good feet, he's quick and he enjoys the game. He'll stay with us for the next few weeks and we'll give him a chance to show us what he can do. If he carries on in the way that he started on Saturday then he could be with us for the rest of the season, but we'll have to wait and see."
