EVERYONE DUG IN

Posted on: Mon 14 Sep 2009

Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 1-0 victory over Bury:

"Overall I'm delighted with the way that we have come through this game.

We came under pressure for the last ten minutes and I thought that we dealt with it really well. It's nice to get a clean sheet because Bury have been more in our face than any other team that we have played against.

We couldn't get our passing game going because they didn't allow us to, and that's credit to them. Our keeper, Mark Gillespie, hasn't been troubled until the last ten minutes or so and that's well done to his two centre halves.

We were very strong as a group defensively. James Wood controlled a very dangerous player very well and Kieran Cahill had a good game even though he is still learning his role. With Wood, his tackles were all well timed and he used the ball properly, and what you get from him is 100% commitment.

I'm really pleased with the way that everyone dug in and I'm really pleased with the clean sheet.

I thought that their two midfield players were two talented lads. They were quick on the ball and they caused us some real problems. We had Liam Davison back after a month out through injury, and the original idea was to give him 45 minutes. He's a strong character and he didn't want to come off, so we left him out there. It's fantastic for him that he got through the 90 minutes, and he had a good game.

Losing Sean Law through injury so early upset my plans for Davison. Towler had to go on so that left us with no options for the midfield. I also wanted to get Jamie Cleary on for ten minutes, to continue his injury come back, but it was all a bit tight for that. If we'd been in a position where his lack of match time hadn't mattered, then I'd have sent him on. Unfortunately Bury were coming at us so I didn't want to risk it.

Bury looked after Ryan Bowman well. That's the best that I've seen a centre half deal with him and he was restricted to just a few half chances.

We had some good deliveries from set pieces from Matt Osmond. Mind you, there were some average and some poor as well, particularly towards the end of the game. He does have a bit of quality and we just need him to get stronger now. He tired towards the end and that's when his quality tends to drop, so we need to work on that.

I didn't really scream or shout at them much through the last ten minutes because I wanted to see how they dealt with it. Steven Swinglehurst got a great block in when they looked like they had scored, and Gillespie had a couple of saves to make as they upped the pace.

Gillespie is a very good keeper and he makes difficult saves look easy. I'm pleased with him and I'm pleased with Swinglehurst in front of him. He has played at Reserve level now and that has done him the world of good. The senior players are helping him and he is improving all the time.

I don't think that we will be in the hunt for many trophies come the end of the season but I am pleased that we are making progress as a team at the moment."
