PROGRESS IS BEING MADE
Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 3-1 away win at Accrington:
"We were absolutely terrific in the first half of this game.
They didn't get a kick and we dominated it, so I was very happy.
Ryan Bowman scored to put us 1-0 up, and we were moving the ball around the pitch using one-touch football.
We played really well and created chances but we gave a stupid goal away just before half time to let them back into it.
Bowman hit the bar twice and Cahill hit the bar shortly afterwards, so we came off at the break having dominated it but level at 1-1.
Unfortunately, when we came out for the second half we stopped playing. We couldn't keep the ball, we were scruffy and we let them have the possession.
We were far too weak in the tackle and we lost our shape and composure. Mark Gillespie made two or three excellent saves, or we'd have found ourselves behind, then Matt Osmond scored from a scramble in the penalty box in the 85th minute to put us in the lead.
The referee played four minutes of added time and we dominated the closing stages. That tells me that it was a mental thing. Once we got ahead again we settled, but it was very nervy until we did.
When things are going for us, we look alright. It's when we have to do the hard work that we start to suffer. That's something that we have to put right quickly.
Just before the game finished James Reid flicked one on and Bowman got clear, and he was never going to miss. He went one on one and slotted it away, so he got himself another two goals.
Their goal was a Bowman own goal, so we can give him a hat-trick from the day. He is a massive threat, and he could have scored four or five, so I'm pleased with the way that he is making progress.
Credit to the lads for the way they started the game, and credit to them for the way they finished it, but we have to have a serious look at the bit in the middle.
There was a 35 minute spell in the second half where we hid away because things started to go against us, and that's a first year thing. They want someone else to take the responsibility, and they can't keep doing that.
We talked about the difference in the way we played in each half in the dressing room, and the way I see it is that our team talk at the break will have been about how well we were doing. Accrington, on the other hand, will have had a real roasting. So they have come out with a bit of fight in them, and we haven't coped.
They'll learn as the season goes on that teams won't roll over for them. They'll have to battle for everything they get, and if they sit back and don't take the fight to teams then they will find it really, really tough.
Until we find a few characters who will rally round and gee the others up, then they will continue to give possession and the initiative away.
We deserved to win - probably only just - so I am encouraged by it. I'm not sure we deserved to get it by such a convincing result, but we'll take it. We created a lot of chances in the first half, so we have to be pleased that progress is being made. It is a group of young lads and they still have to learn what it takes to win consistently. It doesn't just happen by turning up, and that can be a hard lesson to take on board."
