WE TOOK OUR CHANCES
Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 4-1 home win over Oldham:
"I wanted a reaction after last week's defeat at home to Rochdale and everything that we did today was the exact opposite to what we did last week.
We had the desire, we wanted to win the tackles and we wanted to win the game. We've beaten a decent side and I expect them to be in the top four or five with no problems this season.
We said some harsh things during the week leading up to this game and we have had a reaction to it. That's all I really wanted. I can't ask any more of them from today.
You have no chance in this game if you don't have character. They all know that they have a long way to go but if they can't bounce back after a bad defeat then they have no chance.
I was worried this morning to be honest. I wasn't sure what we were going to get from them, especially when you consider that Oldham won by 7-0 last week. We dealt with it in this game and we deserved the win, so I'm happy.
Mark Gillespie made a save when it was 1-1 and that was absolutely outstanding. That gave us a platform to build on and we took our chances after that.
I thought that our first two goals were fantastic team play. Bowman showed great composure when he scored his second because he out-paced their defender, carried it along the bye line and then smashed it in. It wasn't easy at all, but he kept his head and put it away.
I think the result from last week was a blip of our own making. We'd had such a good pre-season but we got a little bit ahead of ourselves and we lost because of it.
We had a very young side full of first years out today and I didn't really expect us to react so well. If I'm being honest I don't really think that it was a 4-1 game, and I'm sure that Oldham will be disappointed with the scoreline.
We took our chances and we looked stronger in the closing stages, and that's a massive plus for us
Ryan Bowman is still a little bit immature, and he still lets things affect him, but he has a knack that we have seen from other players at this level in that he can score goals. He's another who will have an excellent game if things go right for him early on. If we can settle him down then he could be a good player.
We're going to offer Ben Richards-Everton a two-year scholarship because we have seen enough from him now. As with any young player, he has a lot of work still to do, but he does have something about him.
I was pleased with our keeper Mark Gillespie today, he is coming on well. The forwards at the club will all tell you that he is progressing well, but there are areas like his kicking and his upper body strength that he has to work on.
There have been some strange results so far this season and things haven't settled down at all. The big teams from last season - Burnley, Preston and the likes - have all been beaten and they will be bitterly disappointed with that.
I think we will be on the end of some poor results this season simply because we have such a young group. Experience tells me that will work against us, because you don't know what you will get from week to week. If we can get a good season with these lads this year then we know that we'll have a very strong one next year. Only time will tell on that."
United - Gillespie, Wood, Cahill, Law, Richards-Everton, Swinglehurst, McKenna (O'Brien 54), Towler (Bonner 66), Bowman, Sloan (Reid 74), Osmond. Subs - Ball.
