I HOPE IT WAS A ONE-OFF

Posted on: Fri 21 Aug 2009

Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 3-1 opening game of the season defeat against Rochdale:

"We were very poor and it's just a case that we have to hold our hands up to that.

They were better than us on the day and we just didn't get started at all. We were nowhere near the levels that we were reaching during the pre-season friendly games and that is very disappointing.

I don't know whether we underestimated Rochdale or what, but they wanted it more than us and they had more desire than us.It was a very bad day for us.

We didn't start well at all and we gave a penalty away very early on. The defence left it to one another and then two players decided to react, so it was an easy decision for the Referee. We could argue that it was harsh, but there is nothing that you can do about it once it's given.

Mark Gillespie then got injured when he came for a cross and he took a boot to his face. That closed his eye up and we had to take him off. Ryan Bowman had a dipping volley from 20-yards that went the wrong side of the post and, who knows, if that had gone it might just have been different. That's all we offered in the first half though, so I wasn't pleased about that.

We gave another sloppy goal away when the whole team went to sleep and that really put us up against it. We did get one back right away when the keeper misjudged a long ball forward. It bounced over him and James Reid was able to run on and put it away.

Again I hoped that we might push on from there but we conceded within a matter of minutes to give them their 3-1 lead. Their lad carried it forward and smashed it in from about 20-yards when we sat back and allowed him to make his run.

Overall, like I say, we were just very, very poor. I have to hope that it was a one-off because we will have problems if we play like that every week. We have played far better sides than that during pre-season so it did come as quite a shock as to how badly we performed.

They started their season off against Wrexham in mid-week and they lost by 4-0, but they then come here and take us to the cleaners. We have to show that we want it more to prevent that from happening again. It's bitterly disappointing on every level."

Team: Gillespie (Ball 20), Wood, Richards-Everton, Swinglehurst (O'Brien 60), Cahill, McKenna, Osmond, Towler (Reid 46), Law, Davison, Bowman. Subs - Bonner, Sloan.
