JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS

Posted on: Sun 19 Apr 2009

We spoke to Eric Kinder about the 2-0 defeat to Shrewsbury:

"The M6 was closed at junction 15 so we had to go through Wales to get to the ground and that made it a really long journey.

To be honest, we never really got going. The lads had played on Tuesday, then they were taken to extra time against a decent Workington side on Thursday, and I think it's fair to say that they were tired.

It took us nearly four hours to get there and we were a long way off the pace in the early stages.

We were two down after 15 minutes, and both goals were because of defensive mistakes. With the first, Cleary and Aldred didn't really deal with a ball that came down the right hand side and their lad got the cross in. Simon Lakeland tried to cut it out but it bounced off him and ended up in the back of the net.

The second came when Phil Towler took a couple of extras touches on the end of our own area and that gave them the chance to nick it off him. Their striker was able to race away and finish it, and that put us on to the back foot. There's no criticism for Towler in that because he is still an under 16 player, and he will learn from the error that was made.

The rest of the first half was as poor as we have played all season, but I think the amount of games we have played has finally caught up with us. Going to extra time on Thursday definitely hasn't helped, because they put so much effort in to that game, and the Shrewsbury game came around far too quickly.

We were better in the second half, because I gave them a few home truths during the break, and we dominated it for long spells. Unfortunately we found that we couldn't score, no matter what we did, but I have to say that it wasn't down to missed chances this time. It was more a case that we didn't create anything.

Looking at the pattern of play overall I think I have to say that there was only Conor Tinnion who came anywhere near what you would call a decent performance.

It was just one of those days. We started off badly with the journey down there and it continued with the way we approached the first half. Don't get me wrong, we had plenty of time to prepare ourselves for the game, but I know for a fact that there were some tired legs and minds after the Cumberland Cup game.

It's no big deal for us position wise because we can't finish higher than third place and, in fact, we can't finish lower than third place either. That doesn't make the result any less disappointing though.

The lads have one week left, with a Reserve game on Monday and a Youth game next Saturday, and they'll be looking forward to a rest. The more senior members of the Youth squad will play again against Bury, because they can handle it. They have 12 months on the first years, and they have a higher level of fitness.

I didn't play Steven Swinglehurst because I want to protect him a little bit. He has the look of a much older boy, but we do have to remember that he hasn't even started his YTS programme yet. For that reason I don't want him to do too much. He may well get a run out on Monday, but that should be fine because he will be fully recovered by then."

Team - Gillespie, Lakeland, Aldred, Cleary, Wood, Law (Sloan 75), Blake (Towler, time tbc), Davison, Tinnion, Bowman, Reid. Subs - Swinglehurst.
