APPROACH PLAY WAS GOOD
Youth manager Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 1-1 draw with Wrexham on Saturday:
"We had a host of chances in this game and I thought, with scoring so early, that we would push on and get a decent win.
Unfortunately they scored with one of the few chances they had, but I suppose we have to be happy with a point from a top-of-the-table clash.
Our goal came on 13 minutes from a free kick from the left hand side with Conor Tinnion and Matt Duffy. The ball came across and James Reid got in behind them and smashed it in to the bottom corner.
The lad was delighted with the goal, he really was. You'd think we'd won the World Cup with the way he celebrated, but it meant a lot to him because it is been a while since he has played in games like this.
It was a windy morning and a bumpy pitch, so that made things difficult.
We were playing alright though and, like I say, we looked good for the early lead. Having said that, we were tyring to do too much at times and that always leaves you open to an equaliser, especially if you can't build that cushion.
They equalised on 40 minutes with a ball that came straight down the middle. Our centre halves were both caught a bit flat, but Tom Aldred was unlucky not to make the tackle. He recovered the situation quite well, but his tackle sent the ball on to the lad's boot and it flew off in to the back of the net.
We had the wind behind us in the second half and we created three or four really good openings. The football was there for us but it was one of those days where we didn't really look like scoring.
Chris McDougall headed one over the bar when he should really have put it back across the face of goal and Ryan Bowman was unlucky with a couple of chances that he will probably feel he should have scored from. He was trying to be precise when in all honesty he should really have just smashed it and made sure it was on target.
We pressed on right through the second half and we were comfortable, but we can't really complain too much about the draw when you assess the overall performance.
To summarise it all our approach play was really good, but we just lacked that cutting edge.
We are down to seven games to play and we are still relying on somebody else to beat Burnley. Wrexham and Burnley do play each other soon so it's a top two finish that we have to aim for. All we can do is keep going and hope that results do go for us elsewhere.
We're a little bit lightweight up front at the moment but if we keep plugging away then I am sure that the goals will come. Defensively we were solid again, and that's very pleasing. We were punished for the only mistake that was made, and that's just down to bad luck more than anything else.
I decided to start with James Reid today because I felt that was the right thing to do. I wanted a bit of a physical presence up front and I wanted to have a look at him in a game situation. He's given us plenty to think about and we will get him back up to Carlisle from Birmingham on Friday night ahead of the Chester game. The lad really wants to make a success of this and I am as delighted as he is with his goal. It really meant a lot to him, and it's always nice to see that type of heartfelt reaction from a lad.
He started to get a little bit tired as the game wore on, but you have to expect that. I took him off after an hour and he can be really pleased with his performance.
I had a really tough decision to make by leaving Steve Swinglehurst out of the side, but he understands that. He went from picking up the man-of-the-match accolades from his last Reserve game to missing out on this one, but he has time on his side.
To finish off on the game, obviously it's disappointing to be sat with just a point when you hear that Walsall beat Burnley, but that's the way this game can go."
