ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE DAYS

Posted on: Wed 25 Feb 2009

Eric Kinder gave us his reaction to the 2-0 Wigan defeat last weekend:

"It was a very frustrating morning on Saturday.

We're coming in to the last part of the season and we have worked ever so hard to get ourselves in to this position, but it was just one of those days where it wasn't going to happen for us.

Wigan's back four got it completely wrong from an Alex Mitchell long kick in the opening minute and that set Ryan Bowman free. His shot then hit the post and that was the type of situation where I would expect him to score almost every time. If that had gone I think it would really have set us off, but we never quite got to grips with it at all after that.

We missed another couple of half decent chances and we got ourselves frustrated.

It was a similar story in the second half because we never really got to the levels that we expect. We conceded an unbelievable goal from our point of view because a mistake like that is something that Alex just doesn't do. Once that happened I knew that it wasn't going to be our day.

That set us off in to panic mode, but I thought we were going to rescue something from it when Ryan was brought down for the penalty.

Unfortunately he hit the post, and they beat us to the follow up, so we definitely weren't destined to win it. We allowed ourselves to get stretched as we pushed on after that and they broke away and finished the game off with a late second goal.

Overall it was very disappointing, even though we didn't play that badly. We dominated most of the game, but it just wouldn't go our way. Sometimes you have to accept that ... even though it is tough to take.

A measure of how the lads reacted was that they were all sat in the dressing room afterwards as if they had just been dumped on to the bottom of the league. I tried to remind them that they had just played a top flight club and it shows how far we have come to be so disappointed about not getting anything from the game.

We picked up a couple of injury problems from it - Si Lakeland has a calf strain and Sean Law has a groin problem - so we'll have to see how they go with that.

We still have nine games to play and we are determined to keep going. We'll get as many points as we can and we'll see where that leaves us.

It was an even more frustrating result for us with the away results that we have had at Burnley and Walsall recently. We wanted to build on that at home, and on another day we would have done that, especially with the chances that we created.

Wigan have been a bit of a bogey side for us, but we have been putting a few of those to bed this season. We hadn't beaten Walsall at their place, we were having trouble with Accrington and we managed to overcome Burnley. Fair play to Wigan, they stuck to their task and they remain a team that we would like to beat.

I gave Phil Towler a run out and he had a decent game. He can play several different positions and the tempo of the game will have come as a bit of a shock to him. At least he will now know what to expect next season."
