IN WITH A SHOUT

Posted on: Sun 01 Feb 2009

Eric Kinder gave us his reaction to the crucial 3-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday:

"This was a very good game of football.

I don't mind saying that we are the best two sides in the League at the moment. We have played against some very good teams, but I think we've seen two real football playing sides come together today.

The result means that things have really opened up, and they will feel that they can't afford to drop any more points.

I would imagine that there will be occasions to come before the end of the season where both teams drop points, so it will come down to who can be the more consistent as we head towards the last game.

I do believe that one of us will win the League, and the other will finish second, but it is hard to predict which way round it will be.

We've given ourselves a slight advantage, and if we can manage our injury situation then we should be in with a real shout.

I mention that at the moment because we picked up three today, and we will have to see how that goes. Matt Duffy twisted his ankle early on, and we had to bring Steve Swinglehurst on, and Jonny Blake picked up a bit of concussion shortly before half time.

When we spoke to him he told us that it was Tuesday and we were winning 1-0. Obviously it was Saturday and we were winning 3-0, so we knew we had a problem. He took some water on board and he seemed to perk up, but when we questioned him again he thought it was Friday and he had no idea who were playing or where we were. We took him out of the game, kept an eye on him, and he is fine now.

Ryan Bowman also picked up a knock to his ankle, and we had to take him off because of it. He got himself two goals, which was great, but we want him to be stronger and we want to see a better reaction to situations like that.

The first half was an excellent one for us. We got our first goal when Conor Tinnion crossed the ball in from the left. Andy Cook tried to get on to it, and he had the goal to aim at, but it came off the side of his head and fortunately Simon Lakeland was there to pick it up. He flung it back in and Cook scored with what was an unbelievable header. I was looking at it and wondering how he could miss from where he had been moments before only to then score with a chance that was 50 times more difficult - but that is Andy Cook all over.

Andy Cook then slid a lovely pass through the back line for Ryan Bowman, and he was able to slot it in to the bottom corner to give us a two goal advantage.

On the stroke of half time Ryan Bowman went one-on-one again and drew the keeper before giving us a very comfortable lead.

I told the lads during the break that it was just a case of us doing our jobs right, and there was going to be no way back for Burnley. We coped with what they threw at us, and Andy Cook missed a great chance to put the game beyond doubt.

They pulled one back shortly after that, and Alex Mitchell made two fantastic saves just when we needed them, and they never really threatened for the rest of the game.

Overall it was a really good game of football between two really good teams. It was tough, competitive and there was a real desire there from both sides, and it made it a very good win for us.

All I can do now is hope that the injuries don't affect us too much. I'm sure that Bowman will be ok, and Blake seems to have recovered, so we should be alright. Steve Swinglehurst is a natural replacement for Duffy, should we need him, so I'm reasonably happy with it all.

I thought we defended really well in the second half, and Swinglehurst was a big part of that, but the whole side worked hard whether we had the ball or not.

We possibly could have seen a little bit more from the front two, but they both got on the score sheet, so they will argue that point with me, I'm sure.

Shaun Law and Liam Davison were strong in midfield, and Tom Aldred led his back four extremely well.

It has been a great day for us and they have come through a hard game with flying colours.

You can talk about a response from what happened last week but I don't really see it like that. There wasn't much wrong last week, other than we didn't take our chances. I wanted to see the same tempo and the same work rate, and they didn't disappoint me.

Andy Cook and Chris McDougall did miss chances today, but we had a cushion at the time, so it didn't cost us. That's the difference, this time round we scored when we needed to, whereas against Tranmere we just couldn't get the ball in to the net.

We are four points clear, but they have two games in hand, so it really is game on. I think it will go all the way to the wire, and it should be exciting for us."
