A MAGNIFICENT ADVERT

Posted on: Mon 10 Nov 2008

Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 0-0 away draw with Oldham:

"It was a fierce game with two sides who were determined that they wouldn't get beat.

We had the better of the first half, with two or three decent chances, but their keeper was in top form. He made two terrific saves, and they came out after the break and probably shaded it.

They were as committed as we were, and we witnessed what I would call a proper game of football.

The Referee was really good, and he tried to let things flow and there was no quarter given, and none asked for, in what was a highly competitive game.

Anyone watching will have come away from it feeling really entertained, and I thought we were going to nick it right at the end, but it wasn't to be and we have to be happy with the point.

Andy Cook had one cleared off the line towards the end, and Ryan Bowman went through right at the final whistle, only for the keeper to save it. Chris McDougall put one just past the back post as well, so we were unlucky not to take the three points. I'm not complaining though, because Oldham played their part throughout, and I think that overall this was a magnificent advert for Youth football.

I rested Alex Mitchell for this one, so Mark Gillespie got his chance again, and I also rested Matt Duffy. Ryan Bowman took a place on the bench, because I was mindful that these lads had all carried little knocks and niggles around recently. We have a hectic period coming up, so I didn't want to take any risks.

Chris McDougall played up front, Steve Swinglehurst came in at left back and, as I say, I gave Gillespie another start between the sticks. He didn't actually have that much to do, because they missed their chances rather than force him in to making any saves, so it's been a steady run out for him.

Andy Cook had a superb run in the first half, when he turned his man, and the Oldham keeper made a really top drawer save to deny him his goal. Cookie was close again after the break when the ball rolled across to him, and he smashed it on the volley. The keeper was out of position, but unfortunately it hit the defender, who was stood on the line, full in the chest, and they were able to clear it.

He's feeling a bit down about missing those chances, but it's hard to criticise him in my opinion. He gave us a centre forward's performance, and that was despite the fact that Oldham targeted him a little bit. They tried to get him wound up, but he was having none of it, and he just got on with his game.

What he has to accept is that he won't score every week. The important thing for me is that his head doesn't drop when he doesn't and, at the moment, he is playing a superb role. You want to see that he is disappointed if he isn't on the score sheet, of course you do, but you also want to see him give everything whatever happens, and I'm pleased to say that's exactly what he is doing for us.

Chris McDougall had a good game, so he can be pleased with himself. There were a couple of occasions when he possibly could have passed instead of trying to do it all himself, but that will come with time. Once he starts to play regularly he will begin to do the simple things naturally, because he showed us today that he can fit in and play his part.

The defence was solid, and they got their clean sheet, and that was down to the amount of hard work that they were prepared to do.

I've said it earlier, but the best way to close off about this game is to say that any neutrals who watched will have been thoroughly entertained, and they will have gone away from it having really enjoyed themselves."
