HELPING EACH OTHER THROUGH
Eric Kinder gave us his thoughts on the FA Youth Cup victory over Hartlepool:
"We couldn't have asked for a better start to the game than the one we got.
It's always been our game plan, in every game, to get out there and impose ourselves and we did it in this one. We like to get teams on to the back foot as quickly as we can, so to be two up after just 9 minutes is very pleasing.
Jonny Blake got himself a fantastic goal from the edge of the box and Liam Davison built on that when he got on the end of a loose ball inside the area.
When we scored that one, I thought to myself - well, this is happy days, here we go, we're going to enjoy ourselves here. I wanted the lads to keep it going, but we let things slip for a period of about 20 minutes.
We have an arrogance in our side, which isn't such a bad thing, but it can work against you if you decide that the job is done and over. Instead of picking the pace up we slowed things down, and that let Hartlepool back in to it a little bit.
If we'd got the third goal then it would have been really comfortable for us, but it was suddenly they who had the time and most of the ball. To be fair they kept possession well and they scored an unbelievable goal. I was going mad because we didn't press him early enough, but I don't think any of us expected him to score from that distance.
That gave them a bit of hope and they pushed us back for a while. We found them very difficult to cope with for a spell and Alex Mitchell was needed to make a couple of blocks and saves.
For the last ten minutes of the first half we got our composure back and it looked like we were playing with a bit of passion and pride again.
We had a bit of a chat about things at half time and that seemed to do the trick because we upped the gears after the break.
They didn't really trouble us and Tom Aldred got on the end of a Jonny Blake free kick to give us our two goal cushion again.
Andy Cook then hit the woodwork and John Seaton got his reward when he ran in to tap it in to the back of the net.
Chris McDougall will feel that he should have scored, Andy Cook had two decent chances, and we created some other good scoring opportunities, so we could have had ourselves an even bigger scoreline.
I was pleased overall, because the only downer in the whole game was a 20-minute period when we let them control it. If I could get that every week then I'd definitely take it.
I'm more than delighted with the second half performance, so it was a good game for us.
We had to adapt ourselves to what they were doing, and they actually forced us to change our shape. That's the first time that we've had to do that this season. They made us go back to a 4-4-2 because they were getting at us down the right hand side. We usually play with Shaun Law sitting in front of the back four, and with a very tight midfield three.
Their right back was causing us so many problems, and we just couldn't pick him up, so I decided that we had to switch things round to stop that from happening.
The side is quite adaptable, and we can play 4-4-2 if we have to, so we changed it round and looked better for it. Tinnion went wide left, Davison went wide right and Law and Blake sat in the middle. That change took their full back out of the game, so that was a relief for us.
So, like I say, it was a very good game for us, and we can now look forward to the second round.
The draw for round three will be made on Friday, so we'll know whether or not we have a big club waiting for us, so that should add to the excitement for everyone involved. Whoever we get, it won't alter the preparation that we do for the second round, as that will be a difficult game in its own right.
In all honesty, we want to go as far as we can again in this competition because they really are great nights. Even though it was only the first round against Hartlepool, it felt like we were back to last season and that great run that we had. Everything was done right, even down to the shaking of hands before kick off, and when you add that to the fact that you are playing on the first team pitch, it makes it all feel a bit special.
The first years will have enjoyed themselves, and on the back of that it was good to hear the senior lads talking them through. During their good spell, Tom Aldred and Matt Duffy were at the rest of the lads all the time. At one point I heard Tom tell them that it wasn't a normal league game, and that they had to work harder because there were no second chances.
The lad got that spot on. In the league, if you draw, it doesn't really matter, because there are another 20-odd games to put that right. In the FA Cup, you can dominate and draw and then lose on penalties, and that's it, you're gone.
All you are left with then is a million regrets, and Tom Aldred wasn't prepared to allow that to happen. The younger lads took that on board and they understand now that they can't afford to sit back in a knock-out game. It's all part of the growing up process, and it's good that the players are helping each other through it."
Team - Mitchell, Lakeland, Aldred, Cleary, Duffy, Law (Seaton 68), Davison, Blake (Wood 80), Tinnion, Cook, Bowman (McDougall 75). Subs - Gillespie, Swinglehurst.
Youth Boss Eric Kinder was at the Accrington v Wakefield tie tonight, to cast his eye over the opposition for the next round.
He said: "It was tough for Wakefield, because they were down to ten-men, and Accrington scored to make it 2-1 towards full time. I had to leave just before the end, but it was looking like another trip to Accrington for us with the way that things stood. Both sides have battled away tonight, so we'll have to be in the right frame of mind whoever it is that we play, as it's a competition that everyone wants to be involved in."
