A REALLY GOOD DAY FOR US
Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 4-0 win over Bury at full time last Saturday:
"We weren't at our best in the first half of this one.
I think that what we have with the group of players that we have here at the moment is a belief that teams will come here, and we'll roll them over.
They are expecting to be two or three goals up by half time and then coasting it through the second half.
That's a good spirit to have in a team, but they have to be careful that they don't become over confident.
If we look back to last season, we went across to Darlington and we beat them by 4-0. That result kick started our season. This time round, we appear to have kick started it a little bit earlier.
Like I say, we didn't really perform in the first half. We started to get impatient because things weren't working for us, and we hurried things along a bit too much when we didn't get that early goal.
For the first time in a while we decided that we didn't want to play as a team. We had lots of individuals out there, and you could see that they had forgotten what it was all about.
It was almost as if they expected to win. I told them at half time that if they wanted to start doing things properly, then the game was there for them. I reminded them that the only time that things happen for you in this game is when you make them happen.
I told them to keep playing and to think about what they were doing more.
I knew that if we could score one goal we'd be fine. That's exactly as it turned out for us. Once we got back out there it was suddenly a very good display.
We have attacked in numbers, and we created some good chances and played some great football.
The headlines will go to Andy Cook, and he probably deserves it when you factor in that it was his eighteenth birthday today. It's a cracking way for the lad to mark the occasion, it really is.
Where do you start when you are talking about Andy Cook? He's unorthodox, he's annoying, he's a nuisance, he can be ungainly, he argues with me, he argues with his team mates, he argues with the officials, he even argues with his mum and dad who have come down to watch him ... and then he produces a performance like that.
Three of the goals that he scored this morning were unbelievable. If you see a better goal than the one he smashed on the turn then it will be a cracker, because that was a wonderful strike.
To cap it all off with a 35-yarder, it sums up his day. Maybe we could say that the keeper could have done better, but he was so taken by surprise, as we all were, that I don't think he stood a chance.
It may even have been five goals had he not been flagged for offside, and he is adamant that he was in an onside position when he started his run.
I'm running out of things to say about Andy Cook. He's one of those lads that you can watch in training and you won't understand what the fuss is about. Watch him in a game and you see a different player. He's scoring for fun, and he's enjoying his football, so long may that continue.
We have to give a mention to John Seaton. He has been patient, and we've sat down and spoken quite a lot to him. He knows that he has been the only second year not to play regularly, but that has been down to the system that we play. Law and Blake have been better suited to the formation that we have used, because Seaton is an all-action style of player, so there has been no room to use him.
He's had to be patient, because he is an out and out attacking midfielder, and he now has his chance with the fact that Connor Tinnion is suspended. I thought that he took his time to get in to it today, but he played well once he got himself going.
We had Chris McDougall missing due to a family bereavement so we brought Mark Sloan back in to the squad for today. Chris will have as long as he needs to deal with his personal situation, so I felt that it was the right thing to do to bring Mark back.
Ryan Bowman got himself in to a bit of a mess with the Ref, and he committed a couple of fouls, so the Referee came over and told me that he'd had enough. The next incident was going to be a straight red card. We can't afford that, so I made the change and put Sloan on.
I have to say, I was delighted with him. He caused all sorts of problems and he worked really well beside Andy Cook. He's still only 16 but he wanted to show us all that he's worth a contract next season. He's putting me in a position where I am very close to doing that. That was his debut at this level and he didn't do much wrong.
Defensively we are looking very solid. Tom Aldred is a good leader and he is improving all the time. He's become the strong man of the side and he is giving the same kind of performance at Reserve level as well.
It doesn't really matter whether it's Cleary or Swinglehurst or Duffy who stands beside him, because they all play well together. Aldred is playing well and he's a credit to the team and to himself at the moment.
We have an important couple of weeks coming up, but overall I'm happy with where we are. This has been a really good day for us."
