IT MIGHT JUST BE CLICKING
Eric Kinder looks back at the Youth win over Oldham last weekend:
"This was what I would class as a proper game of Youth football.
At times, it was more like a Youth Cup tie, because both sides really wanted to win it. There were bodies flying everywhere to make tackles and get blocks in, and it was very enjoyable to watch.
Oldham are a decent side, and the match was nip and tuck from start to finish.
We got ourselves in front when a great long ball split the two centre halves apart and Ryan Bowman ran on to it quickly. He then had the presence of mind to lob the keeper with what was quite a cool finish from the lad.
We created a couple of decent chances after that, but the first half could have gone either way. There were moments when they had the upper hand, and then there were others when it swung back our way.
They equalised mid-way through the half when a deflected shot sent Alex Mitchell the wrong way. It was a cruel goal from our point of view, but they will feel that they deserved it. I don't think I could really complain that we were all square at the break.
I thought we played really well in the second half. We got back in front when Andy Cook kept possession on the right and then cut the ball across for Ryan Bowman to finish. That was a really good goal for a lad who has been struggling with his confidence a little bit. To get both goals in a game like that will do him the world of good.
It was a very physical game. They obviously did their homework on Andy Cook, because they tried to rough him up a bit, and he had to control himself. He played very well under the circumstances, and he led the line with real purpose. Their back four certainly knew they'd been in a game.
I'm actually delighted with every one of them. They have come through a difficult game with their heads held high, and we are up and running now.
I said two weeks ago that we would to see how we played in this game before we decided whether we were ready for the rest of the season or not and, I'm pleased to say, it now looks like we know what football at this level is all about.
One minor criticism is that we had a raft of chances in the second half, and we didn't take them. When that happens there is always a worry that the other team might nick one, especially when, as Oldham did, they go direct for last ten minutes or so.
Our centre halves coped with it all, as did the rest of the team, so I have to be very happy.
As I have said, I have been worried over the last few weeks that we weren't clicking, and it wasn't really happening for us, but I think we've put that to bed now. We now have three straight wins, and that includes a victory over a side that have won four out of four.
With the way that we are playing I would be really disappointed if we don't at least put a challenge in for everything we are involved with this season. I don't mind putting the pressure on to the lads by saying that, because they have to learn to deal with expectation - it's all part and parcel of the game."
