HAPPY OVERALL
Youth Boss Eric Kinder spoke to us about the 2-0 victory over Accrington:
"It was a really difficult surface, so that made it hard for the lads to play football, but they stuck with it and got the result in the end.
It's also a very big pitch at Darwen, so it makes for a different kind of test for the lads.
We started off really brightly, and Ryan Bowman should probably have scored in the first minute from a Tinnion free kick, but he just didn't quite get enough on it.
We dominated the first half and we went one up after 21 minutes when Blake chipped an angled pass forward for Andy Cook. He volleyed it first time and the keeper had no chance whatsoever.
It was 2-0 after 39 minutes when Matt Duffy played the ball forward. Cook somehow managed to control it with one touch, before hitting it towards the bottom corner. It took a slight deflection, but it was still another very good goal.
I was happy at half time, and I asked the lads to keep doing what they were doing, but it all became a bit of an anti-climax after the break. We didn't really get going again and it was a stop/start kind of game for the most part.
We had two or three half chances, and I don't recall Alex Mitchell having anything to do at all, so it was very comfortable for us. Having said that, Mitchell did produce one top drawer save, only for their lad to then be called offside. Alex wasn't to know that though, so it was good to see that he was alert even though it was a quiet game for him.
We won a free kick right at the end, and Simon Lakeland spotted Andy Cook moving in to space. I thought he was on for another hat-trick, because he dinked a lovely header back across the face of the goal, but the keeper pulled off a marvellous save to deny him. It was a shame, because it would have been nice for the lad to have got the three goals. Yet again he has caused them all kinds of problems, and people would have been talking about him if that one had gone in. They are talking about him anyway, because he's on a great run at the moment, and hopefully he'll keep it going, but it would have been nice for him to have got his third.
The four lads in midfield worked hard, and won all of the second balls, and they kept the forward momentum going as much as they could. The front two weren't firing on all cylinders, but they have another two goals to show for their work, which isn't too bad.
The back four were steady, so overall I have to be happy. It would have been nice to have kicked on in the second half, but you can't always win by four or five goals. Sometimes you have to work hard and dig in and, as I've said before, however much these lads give me, I will always ask for more. They know me, and they know when I'm shouting it's because I want to spur them on.
The state of the pitch in this one meant that we had to change the way we played, and we had to go longer than we otherwise would have done. We are using Shaun Law in a holding role, with Blake, Davison and Tinnion as a tight midfield three, and all four of those lads can see a pass. It's a strong midfield, with depth added by the role that Shaun plays, so it's a pity when they can't be used to their full potential because of conditions, or whatever.
Matt Duffy has much more freedom as well, and he must have supplied twelve or thirteen crosses today. The system that we play allows that, and it's good to see him enjoying it.
Ryan Bowman is going through a bit of a tough spell, by his standards, but he knows that he just needs to keep his head down and the goals will come. He'll work his way through it, and as long as one of the strikers is scoring then we'll be in the box seat in most games.
I had to take Tinnion off, because they resorted to some fairly tasty tackles as the game wore on. Thankfully he has the skill to jink away from that, but I decided to protect him, because they were definitely targeting him. They tried it with Andy Cook for a while as well, but he soon brought that to and end.
I'm still very encouraged by what I have seen, but we have a big game next week. Oldham have had a great start, so if we match them, and if we're talking positive after it, then we can maybe begin to think that the penny's dropped earlier than it did last season."
