BARROW RESERVES 0 - 6 UNITED YOUTH
Andy Cook scored five goals, including a first hat-trick, as the United Youth team ran the show against a young Barrow Reserve side at Holker Street this evening.
Eric Kinder spoke to us about the game shortly after full time:
"They were just a little bit older than us, so there were quite a few young players, and we dominated the game from start to finish.
Andy Cook scored five of the goals, with Shaun Law getting his first of the pre-season to add to it.
We played at a decent tempo, but I thought that we got a bit sloppy at times. For most of it we played in exactly the way that I ask them to, and that is something that I am very pleased about.
Barrow scheduled the game to be played on their main ground, and it is in perfect condition. It was a good one for us, because the surface was the kind that allowed us to play and we were totally in command. It's a nice stadium, and we have to say thanks to Barrow for allowing us to play here. They have looked after us really well, and they gave us a decent buffet after the game, so it has been a very worthwhile journey for us to make. The boys enjoyed themselves, so it's been a very good day.
I was able to get people like Connor Tinnion and Jonny Blake off after 20 minutes and it gave Mark Sloan and John Seaton the chance to have a real go at it for a decent length of time.
We were three ahead by half time thanks to an Andy Cook hat-trick, and he followed that up after the break with another two. Shaun Law scored the fifth, and we could have scored a few more from the chances that we created.
Alex Mitchell made an absolutely fantastic save when it was 2-0 and even though it wouldn't have changed much if it had gone in, it was a superb moment for the lad. It was a direct free-kick that was heading for the top corner, and he somehow managed to get across and tip it over the bar.
Once we got comfortable that was when we started to get sloppy, and I was a bit annoyed with that. We spoke about that at half time, and again after the game, so hopefully we'll be aware of that all the time from now on.
Our trial player from Scotland, Matt Henderson, decided that he didn't want to come along, so he won't be joining us again. He found it very difficult last week, and he let us know that he didn't think it was for him. We'll now keep looking to replace Michael Dowson, but if I go in to the season with this group of players then I won't be too worried."
Team - Mitchell (Gillespie 46), Wood (Lakeland 46), Aldred, Swinglehurst, Duffy (Blake 80), Seaton, Davison, Blake (Law 20), Tinnion (Sloan 20), Cook, Bowman (Davison 75).
